Hurling ordure at the TREACLES, especially those closely related to LessWrong.

AI-Industrial-Complex grift is fine as long as it sufficiently relates to the AI doom from the TREACLES. (Though TechTakes may be more suitable.)

This is sneer club, not debate club. Unless it's amusing debate.

[Especially don't debate the race scientists, if any sneak in - we ban and delete them as unsuitable for the server.]

As we don't have a top level post about this already (nor on reddit) I thought why not make one. Archive.is

Extremely likely the guy was a lesswronger, or at least radicalized by that sort of thinking.

But not much else seems to be known as far as I can tell. Corbin also posted about the HN reactions in the stubsack.

And remember, no fed posting.

Edit: looks like his house also got shot. Archive (after the speculation in this thread, makes you wonder if this was a follow up false flag, as the bottle didn't break last time).

Stolen shamelessly from a followers-only post, so I’m assuming that the originator would prefer me not to give them credit.

alt-textAn exponential graph, of the kind so beloved by techbros, in a vaguely ms-painty style with time as the x-axis and “number of arson attacks on sam altman’s mansion” as the y-axis, and showing a predicted “arson singularity” point in the near future.

From what appears to be the guy's Substack:

East Asian people are on average more intelligent than Black people. Which is factual based on the vast majority of tests we have developed and observed over the decades.

And:

I am an advocate for ending mass migration and initiating mass deportations for illegal migrants in western countries. Not because I am a white supremacist (I am not white) or because I believe there is necessarily anything innately special about being white. I believe these things for three reasons. First, nations have the right to preserve their ethnic identity, and second low skill immigration saturates the job markets of these countries making jobs which could once earn a living wage become unlivable, increasing the amount of value draining people in society by both importing them and undercutting low skill natives. lastly, generally, whiteness in these countries is a decent correlative to some of the things I value.

And:

It is true that many of the features which white supremacist value have little to do with the genetic predisposition to European ancestry and instead have to do with higher IQ; which is relatively more common among whites than most other groups.

So, a common-or-garden guy who is not left-wing or right-wing but a secret third thing that is also right-wing.

Episode #2137 in the saga of "turns out people actually willing to firebomb a Walmart don't have well-thought-out rational politics"

The model of people as engines which add to or drain state revenues, and social welfare as handouts to inferiors not aid to people in certain life circumstances, reminds me of Kelsey Piper. Just where a CEO who does billions of damage in pollution and evades billions of dollars of taxes fits they don't explain.

Ah, racist like my grandma. Make up a statistic, and your bigotry is suddenly scientific fact that you are regrettably forced to accept as population level facts.

"Though we may adore them individually, We must admit that as a group they're rather stupid"

Sounds like your typical commenter on a lesswrong or Astral Codex Ten blog post.

How sad that Altman's shell corporation's property insurance has to pay for this guy's tedious status anxiety

[–] Soyweiser@awful.systems 9 points 3 days ago

The post after that is also a bit worrying

[–] lurker@awful.systems 9 points 3 days ago

oh cool, a racist wacko. yay…

[–] bulwark@lemmy.world 36 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Wouldn't put it past Altman to pull a Jussie Smollett style self attack to garner sympathy as his company goes down the drain.

[–] scruiser@awful.systems 10 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

garner sympathy

He posted a response that criticizes the recent news article about him (of all the times he has acted like a sociopathic liar), and HN was eating it up, so even if this isn't an intentional false flag he is still playing it that way pretty effectively.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 3 days ago

he learned from the best, THIEL.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 3 days ago

too bad not really many people like him to begin with, just like with THIEL. elon has at least a fanbase, that he built up through the years with tesla.

There's something different about Jeremy Clarkson in that meme, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

So two thoughts:

  1. Per Saltman's comments the improvised incendiary bounced off the side of the house rather than breaking and spreading the gas on the house proper. Apparently if you want the bottle to break the way you intend you gotta really just whang that thing because glass bottles are sturdier than you'd think.

  2. One thing I find ironic about his referencing the New Yorker article on him was that part of my takeaway from that article was how mundane he is, individually. Like, he's a snake, but not in any way that isn't pretty standard once you start getting that level of wealth and power. He credibly pretended to be a proper AI cultist for the critihype, and then as the rubber started hitting the road he pivoted towards the direction that gave him and the company more money, even if it meant sacrificing the values that it turns out a lot of other people really cared about (however dumb I might think they are). That's shitty, but it's shitty in the most boring way that so many things are in the rot economy, and it's not like even if they had managed to kill Altman himself there wouldn't be another bunch of enterprising sociopaths ready to move into the same position. That profile is one of the strongest pieces of evidence why even if you are a hardcore AI doom cultist you shouldn't focus your ire on the man himself, because he's just not that special.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

A bit of broken spark plug in the bottle makes them break much easier.

[–] Soyweiser@awful.systems 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Waterballoon molotovs.

And indeed on nr 2. Even sillier is of course that the AI doom people thought they could control people like this.

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Waterballoon molotovs.

Gasoline in a waterballoon is an extremely bad idea.

[–] Soyweiser@awful.systems 2 points 1 day ago

I was not giving real advice on how to firebomb people. Hope that was clear.

[–] fullsquare@awful.systems 9 points 2 days ago

viton balloons are in. not sure who sells them. also wasn't one of their imagined risks that robot god will manipulate people for robot god goals? they sorta should be primed to that

[–] merdaverse@lemmy.zip 13 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Maybe ChatGPT told them to do it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–] Soyweiser@awful.systems 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Don't forget to slash your slash \\ becomes \

E: wait the _ also needs to be slashed.

[–] NickwithaC@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

You need to write it like this:

¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
[–] Soyweiser@awful.systems 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Yeah, because putting _'s around something is another way to your text TIL and all that.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago

its ai on ai violence, probably thier competitor claude/anthropic

[–] lurker@awful.systems 13 points 3 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Wait, if im recalling right a former StopAI activist went on the run after threatening an OpenAI lab and causing it to shut down, it mentions the suspect has threatened an OpenAI lab before so could it be the same guy?? Edit: Just read D Gerard’s latest article, turns out it was a different guy. I do wonder what happened to that activist though

[–] TinyTimmyTokyo@awful.systems 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If there were any doubts before this incident that Sam Altman is a sociopath, there can be none now.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 6 points 2 days ago

well he was "created" by the "anti-christ" obsessed THIEL.

[–] SpaceGameJunkie@awful.systems 3 points 3 days ago

It's a start.
