As someone who transitioned and then dated her male best friend. It was fun, and while it didn't work out in the end because of things outside the relationship, it was one of the best relationships I've had.
Respectfully. That is really cute and heartwarming.
The joke is that the husband and his friend went to Thailand and his friend transitioned. Now the old friend is "missing" and the husband is married to who that friend became.
Ah, I thought that she kidnapped/killed her husband's best friend. Yeah, maybe I watch too many crime/police bodycam vidyas on YT.
ETA: Ah, I'm not the only one.
I understood "we met shortly after" as talking about the wife and the best friend. Like a hyperbolic expansion of the "adult men don't talk about their lives with their male friends."

Maybe once or twice, but I don't think that's why I got the joke without reading an explanation...
I don't know if I'm smart or not, but I think part of the joke is that the husband doesn't recognize that his now-wife is his former best friend, and that unlikely circumstance kept me from understanding the joke even though I read the explanation. (Not the explanation in this thread but the more ambiguous one in the other thread.)
I just had no idea what the joke was until I saw the trans comments. I was busy thinking, like, "That's really hard."

Not so dumb, given this is probably a screengrab from "you", and this character would definitely have murdered his friend
I think that's the context that was messing everyone up lol

Now that's a good friend. Feeling sorry for his friend who can't find a girlfriend. Then disappears in Thailand so his friend can meet the love of his life.
