As someone who transitioned and then dated her male best friend. It was fun, and while it didn't work out in the end because of things outside the relationship, it was one of the best relationships I've had.

[–] Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 27 points 15 hours ago

Respectfully. That is really cute and heartwarming.

[–] riquisimo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 159 points 1 day ago (3 children)

The joke is that the husband and his friend went to Thailand and his friend transitioned. Now the old friend is "missing" and the husband is married to who that friend became.

[–] osanna@lemmy.vg 8 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

Ah, I thought that she kidnapped/killed her husband's best friend. Yeah, maybe I watch too many crime/police bodycam vidyas on YT.

ETA: Ah, I'm not the only one.

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 9 points 15 hours ago

I understood "we met shortly after" as talking about the wife and the best friend. Like a hyperbolic expansion of the "adult men don't talk about their lives with their male friends."

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 128 points 1 day ago (9 children)

Thanks, I'm dumb and thought she murdered his friend.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago

Truth is the three of them bought a farm with six pigs and then ate the friend.

[–] ThunderQueen@lemmy.world 64 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (1 children)

I'm trans and thought she murdered his friend too lmao

[–] urheber@discuss.tchncs.de 21 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

I'm smart and I though she murdered his friend

[–] vaionko@sopuli.xyz 17 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

I'm drunk and I though she murdered his friend

[–] urheber@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 9 hours ago

Smart and drunk are basically synonyms

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 7 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Does it say something about me that I got the joke immediately?

[–] boeman@lemmy.world 4 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Me too. Do you happen to be an engineer as well?

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Erm... no, that can't be it...

[–] boeman@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Were you dropped on you head as a child like me… repeatedly?

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 hours ago

Maybe once or twice, but I don't think that's why I got the joke without reading an explanation...

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 13 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

I don't know if I'm smart or not, but I think part of the joke is that the husband doesn't recognize that his now-wife is his former best friend, and that unlikely circumstance kept me from understanding the joke even though I read the explanation. (Not the explanation in this thread but the more ambiguous one in the other thread.)

[–] A_Drusas@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago

I just had no idea what the joke was until I saw the trans comments. I was busy thinking, like, "That's really hard."

[–] MML@sh.itjust.works 4 points 13 hours ago

I thought she married a murderer.

[–] myotheraccount@lemmy.world 16 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Not so dumb, given this is probably a screengrab from "you", and this character would definitely have murdered his friend

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 2 points 8 hours ago

I think that's the context that was messing everyone up lol

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 10 points 19 hours ago

This would also be a funny interpretation.

If anyone is curious where this comes from, and whether or not it is AI.

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 1 points 8 hours ago

Pita imbalance 😂

Seasons 2 and 3 were peak, can't believe Joe fumbled the ball on that one lol

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 36 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

My best mate and I used to joke that if one of us was a woman or both of us were gay, it would have saved a lot of time.

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 24 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

Ah, if only both of you were women and both of you were gay :(

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 102 points 1 day ago (3 children)

[–] thethunderwolf@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

does thailand have something to do with transgender? is there context im missing?

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 5 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

It's the leading country people travel to for gender affirming surgeries :p

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 3 points 4 hours ago

Thanks that is what was implied but I didnt really know if that was a thing.

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 3 points 8 hours ago

Do they really provide the best care? I always thought it was more of a last resort thing, but perhaps I'm wrong if that's the case

[–] illi@piefed.social 171 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Pretty sure that's the joke (the friend is the wife)

[–] zloubida@sh.itjust.works 98 points 1 day ago (16 children)

Oh thanks I didn't understand the joke

Now that's a good friend. Feeling sorry for his friend who can't find a girlfriend. Then disappears in Thailand so his friend can meet the love of his life.
