Seriously, like i must see 20-30 AW per day minimum. I've never even encountered one ultra, ever. What do you think the percentages actually are? Why are the percentages so high here? Just surrounded here by AW aficionados or something? It's begun to feel surreal.

I do long hikes and have an AWU, it’s awesome. Had a AW5 prior but was about to ditch for a Garmin until the Ultra was announced. Mostly I still see dinner plate Garmins out there but more frequently AWU’s. They’re gaining popularity. You won’t see them much as they tend to be worn by the more hard core active crowd. Those that can afford them.

I’ve seen 3 since release. My dad, a friend, runner guy at a bar

[–] GargantuanGorganzola@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I never saw AirPods Max in the wild until very recently

[–] johnmed2017@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I’ve seen two in the wild, in addition to mine. AWU is a big chunky mofo and the smaller cheaper AWs do almost everything AWU does, in smaller and more affordable packages.

[–] Psychological_Lab203@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

This right here couldn’t be more true. Only reason I got the AWU myself is because I’m clumsy and wanted something a little more sturdy

I’ve seen 4 AWU’s this morning already

[–] TheGruesomeTwosome@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I've only seen one IRL, sitting on a train and using my watch to show my ticket QR code and having the conductor call me fancy for doing it on my S5, while he's got an Ultra around his wrist. Had a little back and first, was good stuff

[–] voongoto@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

haha, yea it depends on a location. Back where I'm from I was very surprised of how many people were wearing AWU in the very early days of it's launch. I wasn't expect that. And then I found out that these were Chinese knockoffs on people's wrists 😂

[–] seeyam14@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

You’re surrounded by poor people

[–] sneezyDud@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This is one of the most American brainwashed by capitalism comment I’ve seen in a while. Sorry if you meant it in a sarcastic way.. my radar is off recently

[–] facemusk@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

actually, the opposite is true. i'm the out-of-place peasant for sure

[–] joe_from_iowa@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I mountain bike and I see a lot of them among mountain bikers.

[–] joombar@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

But not on roadies. Think of the added weight!

[–] ktmengr@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I ride mtb and road and got one primarily to save weight. Don’t have to carry my phone anymore with LTE on the watch. Half joking on the weight, but I’ve also broken a few phones mtbing so that’s another benefit.

It's titanium so it's still lightweight. The real issue is the aero drag it causes.

Same. I've seen numerous 15 Pros already in the wild, but still haven't seen an Ultra.

[–] Weird_Ninja8149@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I often see them, just yesterday I saw our company doc wearing one.

[–] efito832@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I work in tech, and where I work I tend to see them often.

[–] the_kid1234@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Same. We all spend way too much on outdoor gear, the latest campout looked like an Everest summit.

Also consider that this is literally the Apple Watch subreddit.

That’s what people are going to be posting about.

[–] porym@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I mean the Ultra is made for pretty specific purposes and a lot of people don’t need that.

[–] joombar@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They’re also pretty polarising in their style, whereas the standard Apple Watch is pretty subtle in its styling

[–] tormunds_beard@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] oliverjanda@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I see an ultra (mine) every day! 😂 But also know 3 more people that own one...

[–] welldressedpepe@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have ultra because I love a big screen, you can tell I also have a pro max. Yea it’s rugged but I don’t think it’s for a purpose necessarily. Same thing why most of Jeep Wranglers are on the road not in the woods. I still rock the first version, it works great, battery capacity is still at 100%

[–] WestKester@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Good point OP, and like OP I see lots of AW in my normal day but I can only recall seeing two Ultras.

But, but, when I see the AW I am seeing the result of what, 8 years sales, the S0/1 to the S8. So maybe I need to divide the number I am seeing by 8. However, even taking that into account I am seeing a lot more AW than AWU.

[–] nothingexceptfor@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

they’re quite popular here in London, I see lots of them around, and they all still look like ugly bricks to me

[–] futuretardis@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Location, location, location. I have an Ultra but mostly work from home. Otherwise I’m in the mountains hiking or running.

[–] Slow_Ish81@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’ve started to see more on my commute on the metro, but by and large it’s difficult for people who wear sleeves to wear them. Mine tends to stand out some but I don’t really care, I like the durability of the Ultra and the battery life. I can go on a long run, listen to music, and I don’t have to ever worry about battery.

That comes with a compromise I don’t think many want though.

[–] FatThor1993@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m a teacher and a lot of people have them. They’re amazing for teaching high schoolers

[–] WorldlyDay7590@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

One of the directors here at work has one. He doesn't know what a reddit is tho.

[–] cercant01@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

True enough. I've got one and I only ever see it on my wrist ;) Seriously, I've never seen it on anyone else.

[–] Bostonlbi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I bet location is a big factor. I see them pretty often here in Colorado where there are lots of people with outdoorsy hobbies. Even if you’re not super athletic, It’s perfect for weekend camping trips since it can last multiple days on a charge when you may be away from grid power.

[–] PabloSRT8@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because it’s more expensive and most people don’t need its extra features.

[–] snuzet@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Always rich older dudes who have the coin to drop

[–] airbnb-karen@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Only ever seen one worn by a Russian guy while staying at the Grand Park in Rovinj.

[–] Concept-This@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

No joke, I saw a dude driving a lambo the other day and he had his arm out the window. I saw he had the ultra with the orange band. One of the few times I saw one

Rarely see them out in the wild, if ever. It's really not as popular among "normies" as this forum would make you think. Hell, most of them don't even know it's a thing.

Obviously more popular with Apple/tech enthusiasts (the audience here), especially among the ones that need validation because they bought the expensive thing.

[–] getdeambalamps@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Really? After the Ultra 2 came out I saw at least 3 of them in the wild already. I was actually wondering the opposite about whether we reached peak Apple Watch.

[–] BoyWhoSoldTheWorld@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Just anecdotal my friend, I see them all the time.

[–] ShrimpRampage@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

In the military ultra is the most popular Apple Watch. More common than normal AW.

[–] kuzcoduck@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They are very expensive? That being said if you work in tech you see them daily

[–] GenghisFrog@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I see a couple a day. Lots more regular ones, but those have been around a lot longer.

[–] paulmeyers42@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I live in Southern California, I see them all the time here, and not just in the gyms. But it might be a regional thing.

[–] flyakker@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I see one every day in my wrist. I see them often in the wild. Being in tech and medical, plus a large city with a lot of high earners, they aren’t exactly uncommon here.

[–] Greennit0@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Same reason that everyone got a M3 in a BMW sub, or everyone on a gaming sub got an RTX 4090.

It‘s usually not the average person that has huge interest in the topic. The average joe just got his watch and doesn’t care to read anything about other people’s experience.

[–] Efficient_Gas_3213@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You must not be hanging around anyone that gets out and active. I see plenty on walks, bike rides and sports.

[–] Norio22@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You see more here because this is a fan forum

[–] 1point4millionkdrama@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You’re probably in a city filled with poor people, or you only hang around poor people. I’m in Seattle where people are rich and ultras are everywhere
