I just got an email from my supervisor saying that my thesis is almost there. About one more week of concentrated effort and then it’ll be done. Then I’ll have my final month to just proofread, check the citations, format and do all the frontmatter nonsense. I’m so happy I could cry.

While the daily thread is awesome, has anyone noticed how the rest of Lemmy feels like reddit years ago? Way less anger and arguments about who is technically correct etc… It’s just more fun.

I browsed popular on reddit today and suddenly loads of them are rateme or amiugly etc… that were never in that feed full of incel neck beard reply’s. I like it here :)

Some of us remember when Reddit was a lot like this. Smaller, a bit more techie, lots more laid back than it is today.

I'm also a little scared that this will end up like Reddit. Not totally scared, because there's no single company trying to maximise your engagement with rage bait and dopamine. But a little scared what 100 million users would bring.

I've arrived at my cousins place out west that I'm catsitting at for the next month. It's one of those soulless rabbit warren new estates but the house itself is actually really nice (they supervised the build and did a lot of rectifications) Cat is fairly happy with her own company but still appreciates a human to dish out the wet food..

Despite a second physio visit my neck and shoulders are still feeling awful. Flat out of money until i get paid tomorrow night, but on top of buying me groceries of my exact favourite brands and leaving the house in a very clean and cozy state, my cousin and partner have very generously left a $500 gift card. What a lovely feeling. Going to use that on a massage this weekend. I'm disgustingly exhausted ...

For some reason the new new estates with 0 trees are just the fucking worst hey. I’m in a 2000’s estate and yeah look it’s not great, but at least they had the forethought to put in some feature trees.

IMAX tickets for Oppenheimer acquired! The last time I was IMAX I was with a bunch of mates watching Inception and I remember it being such an awesome experience so hopefully it's just as good (or better) this time around.

Since we're doing dinner posts, image ID: blue bowl of stirfry veggies and pork on rice, and a Temple Brewing Co. Okinawa Sour.

Left over pork from a roast we did to put meat in out dishes. Very filling :)

I hope everyone is having a nice night, sending you all my love 💜

It's been a big day and I'm heading to bed early. Bot #001 is on night shift, and will now be handling the day name in the new post title. Hopefully it won't be a repeat of last Thursday (which it marked as Wednesday).

It’s like early spring out here. Sun warm, wind not too cold. Went out in short sleeves for lunchtime walk and not cold.

[–] StudChud@aussie.zone 8 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (4 children)

El Niño has been declared this season,
The Sun warms us up, that's the reason.
It'll be hot and dry, oh so relatable,
La Niña was humid and fucked, oh so excitable.
Witness the symptoms of our climate attack,
She's left and El Niño is here bringing sweaty back.

edit: corrected :)

No mood killer like nighttime bus mood killer. If inspectors are gonna keep checking buses, and if prices are this high, then they better be on damn time. A bus being late by three minutes can delay my getting home by forty minutes.

That's not worth ten bucks a day.

EDIT: Yup, won't be home until 11. Bus is that late. Fuck PTV.

In good news, the museum was free with my student card. In bad news it was so horrifically noisy I bailed after less than ten minutes before I had a meltdown. It is not a good place to be with a noise sensitivity.

I did have a lovely walking tour around town taking lots of photos of parks and buildings. I walked from Treasury Gardens up to Melbourne Uni then down to Flagstaff, so I'm very much enjoying being able to sit down for a while on the train

The second best kitchen appliance is the rice cooker*
Shiny base, matte black lid, uh such a looker
No I don't have a crush on the rice cooker
This appliance can't be my culinary hooker
My heart only has space for one nutritional love
A nightshade root, gifted from mother nature above
Its many forms, into my mouth I will shove
Apologies, I digressed from my second true love
Rice cooker
Without ya
I probably just use pasta 🤷‍♀️

Cats cuddled, gas bill paid, 2 loads of washing done and on the line along with the Uniqlo thermals that didn't quite dry yesterday.
Now having a breather with Sammi on my lap and texting back and forth with my aunt about options for restaurants for my birthday, before I take up some leaves for the green bin.

I've successfully sorted my photos from my trip today. The systems garden at Melbourne University had some really great plants, and there was a lot there for the size of it. I also enjoyed looking at the buildings around town, both old and new. There is such an amazing variety of styles and it has been quite a few years since I have been in town to see them. Google maps just shrugged and said "I dunno" when I asked it how to get home, so I wandered until I saw tall buildings to follow, which led me to Queen Victoria Market. I used to work nearby, but it has changed a lot since then.

If you'd like to see my photos, they are on my blog.

[–] Nath@aussie.zone 8 points 2 years ago

I proposed to my wife under the centre dome of the Exhibition Building. Genius move, because I’d see the building as I went past every day and be reminded regularly of that moment – but almost never get a chance to go inside, so it never became something mundane. Also, great odds that building would be there longer than us. We’re now in Perth, and it’s been years since I went past the building on the tram. You’ve brought back some happy and special memories. Thank you.

I finally have had a calmer day.

I am having kitty cuddles and knitting my way through the first clue of a sock along.

Feeling better.

Just looked through my primary school report cards sent over by my mother, and I didn't even remember this, but they actually marked on the cards whether you were underweight, overweight or of an "acceptable weight". Aside from the fact that we were sitting multiple exams per year from age 7 onwards back then, it sounds so ridiculous that they had our weight on there. Did they do that in Australian primary schools back in the 90s?

e: I have chalked up this weight business to certain countries being way too numbers oriented about everything even with young children

Vacuuming is done! But also I have completely forgotten what I was up to with everything else. I feel like I'm in a bit of a career and identity crisis at the moment which is distracting me heaps. I will try my best to get back on track.

Somehow I've hurt my foot. Not in the "I've been working on my feet all day" way that's familiar to me, but on top of the foot as though I dropped something heavy on it (except I didn't). Just liberally sprayed with my go to pain relief spray and contemplating my dinner. Mr Peeler cooked shazlicks which were lovely but the chicken ones could've done with a little more cooking (I checked the kids ones and they were fine, just mine didn't seem right). Pray for me!

[–] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Oh holy undercooked chook god/s please look after PeelerShelia she does amazing things and she doesn't deserve to be ill right now. 🙏 amen

The Goon Squad is out in force at Essendon right now. Avoid like the plague if you don't wanna be hassled. [edit] Ticket inspectors 🎟️ 🔎 if I'm not being clear enough.

[–] MeanElevator@aussie.zone 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Their job title is stupid - 'authorised officer'

Imagine telling someone what your job is, with no context of living in Melbourne.

I'm an authorised officer_

What's that?

You know...a ticket inspector

Well fucking say that next time...twat

I guess Christmas in July is a real thing. At least KFC thinks so and says we should all be wearing ugly Christmas jumpers, putting up Christmas trees, ordering chicken buckets, and having the time of our lives with friends at a party.

[–] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 8 points 2 years ago (2 children)

That's ridiculous. The only good thing about Christmas is the Christmas pud and custard. Everybody knows that. Get back in your hole kfc.

[–] heyheyitskay@aussie.zone 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Fun fact: KFC in actual Christmas is a thing in Japan but I agree, nice try.

Tell you what, being in the office has got me feeling like a rat in a warming pot. Had to do a fire safety tour and spent the entire time thinking how embarrassing it would be to have a panic attack on my first day back.

First day back in the office this afternoon so you bet I'm just anxiously sitting about my house until it's time to get ready.

On a brighter note, I did get a phone call from my supervisor earlier to confirm I had all my security tags in check, which gave me the brief opportunity to mention moving out of my position now we've returned to the office. They've said they'd move the conversation up the chain and see what can be done, apparently one of my coworkers has asked to be moved as well.

I walked over 7km on my trip around town today. Now I'm home and Mr woof really wants second walkies. I probably should go now before I sieze up and can't move at all.

Imagine watching "Judgement at Nuremberg", a moving film about the Nazi war crime trials. Imagine it was rewritten so that the judges are presented as conflicted and incompetent, the case presented that Goring, Speer , Ribbentrop and other architects of the war could not be tried because there was no laws against it at the time. Also that the Allies were really responsible because they were imperial powers and anyway, they knew Germany was going to attack and could have stopped them. And did you hear about Dresden? The Allies bombed a city. So it was ALL the Allies responsibility and choice. Not Germany's fault at all. Then you read the credits and the movie was made by Nazis.

Kind of like all the shit Russia is saying now to justify attacking Ukraine and committing genocide.

Kind of like the shit every single one of these genocidaire presidents say at the War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague. "You have no right to try me, I do not recognise you. You are the criminals, not me. Also, not guilty. "

That's what watching "Tokyo Trial " on Netflix is like. Imagine my shock when I read the credits and the series was partly made by the Japanese government. ( no shock at all, just a little that they have the gall to say it out loud when they have been told a hundred times ) Shame on them.

If it were in my purview I would make formal diplomatic complaints.

Don't watch Tokyo Trial, it's the worst propaganda.
