LOS ANGELES—In an effort to reframe the conversation by ending the discussion altogether, advocates across the country encouraged the public on Monday to stop using any term at all to refer to homeless people. “Given the widespread chronic issue of unhoused individuals, we recommend that people who want to discuss the homelessness problem in the United States refrain from making any reference to them whatsoever,” said activist Daniel Morganson, who added that instead of saying “homeless,” it would be far more acceptable to silently stare off into the distance. “Any mention of the homeless could be considered offensive, which is why it’s important for everyone to act like they don’t exist. We don’t want to risk humanizing them.” At press time, the advocates clarified that it was still okay to call the homeless “subhuman leeches on society.”

Lol gotta love the onion. TBF, the treatment of homeless people in the US really is quite shocking.

In the US, you either exploit or are exploited.

It isn't handled much better outside the US tbh.

Like I know this is mainly targeted towards the US but I hate how everyone acts like the US is the only nation with a homeless population problem

My country has almost none, we have shelters and social security. People don’t socialize with them a lot but otherwise they are full citizens, they can eat anywhere, take the bus, go to movies, etc. The ones with drug issues can get help and harm reduction. Most countries around me do the same. The US is the richest country on earth and CHOSES to do nothing.

You're country and neighbors are the minority when it comes to that. I've lived in a couple of countries with vastly different cultures and really it's all the same. The poor are treated like trash in various ways. US, Mexico, Japan, China, india any south American country. I'm not saying this in defense of the US but you're privileged in that regard.

Weird, when I think "Subhuman leeches on society" I don't think of homeless people. I think of people with multiple homes.

This is spot on.

I watched the miniseries on the cult in Oregon in the 80s recently, and my biggest takeaway was the anchors referring to "street people" as if it wasn't the strangest thing to say. I guess it's better than hobo.

If I ever find myself having anything less than disgust for my country, I need only look at the nearest tent city to remember who we are, when we're not shooting each other, at least.

A few sociopathic greed monster families, a whole lot of greed monster worshipping wannabe sycophants, and the greatest victims who didn't play capitalist wage slave ball well enough for diverse reasons, cast out to die of police harassment and exposure to the elements, while most peasants openly despise them for lowering their property values by selfishly continuing to draw breath while destitute. 🎶🇺🇸Oh say can you seeeeeeee? 🇺🇸🎶

I firmly believe that of all the problems first world societies face these days,
