The sequel is waaaaaaay better by the way, I would play that if you only had the time to try one.

Totally agree! But the first game has a special place in my heart for some reason and I just really enjoy playing through it.
I was going to go straight into 2 once I finish this playthrough, buuuut I'm feeling Chrono Trigger next lol
Can't say I have a favourite one to play as when I finish one I rarely go back. My favourites that I've played so far are Dragon Quest XI, Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana and Ruined King.
I've been meaning to get into the Ys series as I've never played them. Do you have a recommended starting point?
I haven't played any earlier ones as they're a bit old for my tastes. I've completed Ys VIII and played some of Ys IX but couldn't say much about it. When I searched the same question before I started, the consensus seemed to be start with Ys VIII then Ys IX. The games aren't in chronological order though so just play what seems interesting.
The newer one, Ys X Nordics, I also haven't played due to the controversy surrounding it (they released it in Oct 2024 then a couple of months later announced a different version that was released in Feb 2026 with more content and QOL added - if you wanted the update you had to buy the whole game again!).
I love JRPGS.
I always burn out on Octopath quickly. The 8 disjointed stories just don't draw me in.
And the storylines are not that great to begin with. Plus the voice acting and the writing is on a 80s Saturday morning cartoon level of bad.
I heard compared to the Japanese writing the English localization added a ton of unnecessary flourish.
I was going to buy this one a while back, then I saw that it was like 85 bucks and got like 8 indie games instead. I might sail for it if I ever get off my ass and put the steam deck back together though.
Yeah it very regularly goes on sale on Steam. There's a bundle of 1 and 2 coming out for Switch 2 in October. So that's a better deal for sure.
Oof yeah that's pricey! I picked up the first game second hand at EB Games a while back for like $30, I still don't own a physical copy of 2 yet
I just picked this up from the library, along with ori. I had never heard of ori before, and so had zero expectations, so far it's a pretty fun platformer.
Glad to know octopath is good, hopefully I can get to it.
The Ori series is amazing!!! I picked up the physical copy with both games included a few months ago and was seriously surprised how good both games were, especially the second title
Sounds lovely. Enjoy!
Octopath 1+2 are a couple amazing games, the soundtracks, BP and discover and break weakness systems add some variety to the turn based combat, secret rare encounters, bosses, unlocks, etc. My all time favorites are ff7 and 8 that includes some heavy nostalgia, but if I were to pick up a turn based rpg today it would probably be an octopath or pillars of eternity game.
Amazing game(s). I played it for 3 hrs on my Switch and then bought it on Steam to play it on my Deck at full res 60fps cause I wanted to experience it the best way I could.
2 in particular would look amazing on the SD!
Playing it currently and it absolutely does (1 did as well tho!)
I've tried a couple times to get into Octopath Traveler and fell off it both times. I'm not sure why. I feel like I'd probably like it if I gave it a chance. The first time I think I stopped after getting every character the second time I think I stopped after finishing a couple chapters on a few characters. Is there an order people usually get characters in? That I think was part of it for me the second time. I started with Ophelia and that felt like a bad choice.
