I am starting to believe it is a "PR stunt" from the oil industry. Together with giving the responsibility to each individual.

Of course people will be against it if you frame it like this.
It's easy to ignore the truth when your paycheck depends on it. Also the cheapest way of doing things is always the one that abuses the planet, people and animals. So if you're either struggling financially or a psychopath, you will be against environmental measures.
Imagine the world we would live in now, if Al Gore would have had become president.
you mean if Dubya hadn't stolen the election, or if Al Gore had grown a spine and contested the win? A distant memory. Just another part of a long line of Democrat candidates being complete cowards.
Imagine if Carter hadn't lost to Reagan.
