Watching "oh boy was I wrong about her," and I can't get my brain to stop interpreting the main girl as trans, making her feel super-relatable to me.

Backstory is that she just used to pretend to be a guy until recently btw.

Left to right, top to bottom.

  1. Dandadan
  2. Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru
  3. Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru
  4. Tokidoki Bosotto Russia-go de Dereru Tonari no Alya-san
  5. Horimiya
  6. Kowloon Generic Romance
  7. Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia
  8. Kono Kaisha ni Suki na Hito ga Imasu
  9. Fruits Basket

Fun fact: out of those only 4 and 8 are rom-coms and both are a bit weird.
4 is an ecchi with characters speaking bad Russian occasionally, if you know the language, it will hurt your ears.
8 is about an adult couple with a very established relationship that hides it in public. Not exactly how rom-com genre usually works.

??????????

I think you're being far too strict in your application of genre. Like, the name of Dandadan is a romcom reference... And it exists because the author was told to read shoujo romances to work on his character writing. It is literally and deliberately a fusion of shounen action comedy and shoujo romance.

Alya is good with the fan service but holy shit the actual plot is so boring. The sister carries the show IMO.

I like Horimiya because the relationship is established early on, so you get to see more dynamics between the characters instead of just watching tsundere over and over again until someone confesses at the end of the season. Polar Opposites does it well too.

Dandadan is fun even without the romance part.

I might have to check 6 and 8, those look interesting. High school romcom sometimes get tiring, and adult characters with adult problems would be refreshing for a change.

Well, you'll never have a relationship like that if you stay home watching anime all day...

Idk it seemed to work out for Geoff Thew

Thanks! I only read the manga and didn't recognize it.

The pain is real but they can also be fun to watch (which results in laughing during episode and mild sobbing after episode).
