I have the Minnesota D/ST on my fantasy team and I’m dropping them because I have a feeling Bears are going to go BONKERS on offense Monday night. BEAR DOWN!

[–] N0S0UP_4U@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This is your brain on drugs

[–] OmarHunting@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Anyone who throws Caleb Williams box scores for your arguments against him, know that the second you do that - we know you’ve never watched him play.

If Fields still hasn’t shown he’s the man, I can not wait for CW to be here. You haters have no clue what you’re against. He’s incredible.

[–] IrishGrouch34@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The Matt Nagy effect seems to be full steam ahead in KC

[–] N0S0UP_4U@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

His receivers are still letting him down just like old times on the Bears too

[–] patchinthebox@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

We should fire Flus and Getsy.

[–] asilverman1025@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Steelers fire Canada leaving us as the only franchise that has never fired a coach midseason. I wish we were a real organization man. Denver loss should’ve been Eberlose’s last game with us and yet he decides to one up himself with that Lions loss. Despicable

MVS had his Velus Jones moment last night

[–] Azorces@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

One thing I’m really struggling to understand both here and in bears media land is how Justin had a “fantastic” game on Sunday. Are we really going to set the bar at 170 yards passing with one TD pass and a fumble as fantastic? I totally understand that the coaching sucks especially on the defensive side of the ball, but can we stop treating this whole situation as all or nothing. Justin has been underperforming all year and has yet to put together a good game winning drive. We had 4 turnovers this game and didn’t get 30 points that’s pathetic, is some of this on Getsy yes it is, but some of it is in Justin too for not executing. Good players shine through like DJ Moore and TJ Edward’s despite poor coaching performance. I really hope we look to draft a new QB with a brand new qualified staff this spring as this team is long gone as it currently stands.

[–] isw2424@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Long way to go but it’s thanksgiving and bears are in prime position for at least Harrison Jr or Caleb/Maye and possibly a combo of both. Patriots beat G-men this weekend and we lose to Arizona and we’re back in 1-2 position

[–] pouch28@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The NFL has gotten pretty boring to watch. Even last night between the Chiefs and Eagles it was more about miscues and penalties than it was great plays. I think Tom Brady has a point when he says between coaching, player development and the rules the game really isn’t about excellence anymore. Maybe the combination of lack of practice time and the preference for rookie players just led to a situation where teams are mostly young players that don’t know what they are really doing.

It’s an interesting situation for the Bears. If we draft well rounds 1-4 we are likely trying to start 3-4 more rookies next year, on top of a lot guys in starting in years two and three. Generally I think having a young team is a positive but currently the best teams in the NFC are more veteran heavy with the Eagles, 49ers and Cowboys.

I think something has to change. The NFL needs to change some rules about salary cap and player salaries or the players need to become more aware about maximizing their overall experience not just their money. Or maybe the NFL just needs to offer far larger incentives to teams that make the playoffs, or win the Super Bowl.

I guess my point is watching Mahomes who may be the greatest QB in NFL history try and throw to MVS, Watson and Rice seems criminal.

[–] Subpars0up@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

maximizing their overall experience not just their money

Give their physical and mental well being for the experience while the owners make billions?

[–] theresabeeonyourhat@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I see absolutely no reason to move on from Fields next year, even if our top pick is a QB. Make the new guy earn it & let Bagent in on the competition, too. His mechanics are fucked, but I think he could surprise everyone by taking a huge step next year.

My preference would be to draft MHJr, trade back & target a QB with potential later in the 1st or in the 2nd round.

With that said, nothing will freaking matter if we get another shit head coach

[–] pleasedontbingme@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m finding myself more interested at getting a project QB at the 1/2 turn like Nix or Penix and letting them sit for a year or two while also picking up MHJ than drafting Williams or Maye and just sending them to the wolves.

[–] Practical-Courage812@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This is kind of where i am at. There is still a chance if we trade down from the first overall pick we gain another first next year, that we can use on a QB if Fields continues to suck with a new coaching staff. There is still too much uncertainty with the top QBs this year where im find kicking the can down the road another year while grabbing 2 legit starters with our 2 picks this year (MHJ and someone else). The chance of Williams going to a team and becoming a stud are just as high as us taking him and Fields turns into a stud on another team. Give me the players who are less likely to be busts this year

[–] vamsi93@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

No. For the love of god I do not want to mess up potentially having alignment with HC/QB. In the last 25 years that has NEVER happened for us. This might be the first time that it’s possible for us…

[–] beardownftpbro@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

They just fired Canada and they never fired someone mid season can we do the same hear bears. Fire flus and getsy

[–] dafoo21@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The only difference is Canada is legitimately alot worse than Getsy and Canada had been with the steelers longer.

By now, I'm probably well known for being extremely critical of Getsy. And it's not bc I don't think he can be a decent to good OC, it's that he has shown he can properly gameplan for Fields but then doesn't stick with it. And then obviously the conservative 2nd halves when bears are up by more than one score.

But, with Flus being that ceo HC, I wonder if he's the one directing the conservative plans.

At this point, I'm done with Flus, he can get fired. But, we can't fire him and Getsy, bc that leaves the team without a DC or a OC and then, of course, HC.

Let Getsy stay, have Hightower be the HC. We have a couple vet position coaches to move to DC. We don't have the same on the offensive side, so like I said Getsy stays and maybe he will be less likely to shut it down with a lead?

Either way, it's never going to happen. The players seem to still like him even if he needs to go.

[–] PUfelix85@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I feel very similarly to you, but I think the problem is Getsy and not Flus. I think Flus trusts his defense to get him to the finish line because he is a defensively minded head coach. Lovie had this issue sometimes too. I think if Flus had an offensive mind he trusted to get the job done, he would get rid of Getsy, but I don't think he trusts anyone on his staff enough to take over that role and he knows he can't call both offensive and defensive plays the whole game while also managing the rest of the team.

Whisper: “No”

[–] ZaxRod@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Can someone remind me of the order of how Eberflus was hired? Who hired him? Poles? Am I remembering wrong that he was not hired directly by Poles?

[–] pooptimewithreddit@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Eberflus was already interviewed along with several other candidates before Ryan Poles was hired.

Rumor around the time of the hire was that owners wanted Jim Caldwell, most of the rest of the hiring committee wanted Dan Quinn, and Poles chose Eberflus by himself.

Poles says Eberflus fulfilled all of his criteria for a coach when they first spoke so he followed his instinct to hire him and conclude the search.

[–] rustysurf83@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The most important criteria being that they are both represented by Trace Armstrong who also happened to be on the search committee for some random reason,

[–] TheSnowTimes@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

https://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/bears/ct-cb-chicago-bears-coaching-gm-search-20220119-2a5tmkml5jfh3bgcpctsim2g3u-story.html

Bill Polian did the interviews and gave a list to Poles. Poles kind of knew Flus

• Poles hired Jan 25 • Flus hired Jan 27

Ryan Poles wanted to be an NFL GM, so he took the job knowing he didn’t get a full say/look in the coach.

[–] vamsi93@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

At this point I want fields gone for his own sake; not that I think we as an org can find a better QB, but I know for a fact that he can find a better team

Taking a qb first overall or sticking with Fields, the bears will inevitably make the wrong decision. I'm not going to pretend to confidently know the answer. I just hope the coaches are gone after this year. You have to know there's better options out there at this point.

[–] LakerGiraffe@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I still can't believe this fuck face tried to say the loss wasn't his fault because of play calling that he was responsible for weeks ago.

Absolutely fucking unreal.

I can see the talent on this team coming together in another year, but this team needs a bona fide, quality head coach and coordinators on both sides of the ball.

As dumb as it sounds, I see what Eberlose means by saying they are close. They are close because the talent is there, but coaching and putting players in positions to NOT succeed when the situation arises has been the main reason they are not getting over that proverbial hump.

I seriously think one more solid offseason of FA signings and draft picks accompanied with ACTUAL FUCKING COACHES can lead the Bears to being a good NFL team or, at the least, watchable again.

[–] Iron_Mike0@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They really were close to beating the Lions who are genuinely a very good team this year. It would just really be nice for a coach to own up and say that close doesn't count and it's up to him to get the team over the finish line.

[–] One-Job-674@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Fields is pretty much middle of the pack in most statistics. People keep saying he needs to play like an MVP to stay and I’m wondering why that is the bar? If he’s consistently an average QB, I say build the rest of the team and see if you can find good coaches. A first round QB is just as likely to be worse than better.

[–] whatever12347@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

He isn't consistently average. His strengths and weaknesses are so extreme that he fluctuates between great and terrible. His stats look average right now, but 8 of his 12 touchdowns came from 2 games. That inconsistency isn't sustainable.

[–] One-Job-674@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

That’s a fair point. From my POV it’s hard to disentangle Field’s inconsistency from Getsy’s. There’s enough blame for both. Watching games it always feels like Getsy moves away from what’s working. I see improvement in pocket presence and anticipation, but I could see people being out on him for that.

[–] PUfelix85@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

There are two ways to build a contender.

  1. Draft a top 5 QB and build your team around him with whatever capital your GM has left to work with.
  2. Have a Kyle Orton quality QB and build your team with expensive weapons with the piles of cash your GM has to work with.

Pick one.

It seems like most of this sub wants to have Option #1. I wouldn't be upset with Option #2 even if that meant that our QB was Justin Fields.

[–] One-Job-674@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Fields is an average QB with the current coaches and roster. I’m not convinced that he couldn’t be a top 10 guy if those improve. Top WRs and LTs also command a high price, but their hit rate in the top picks is much higher than for QBs. If the team actually looks good and Fields is still average, I agree with option 1, but until then I think we can still build.

[–] rustysurf83@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The Bears have never demonstrated an ability to judge or develop QBs. They need to stick with Fields one more year while he’s cheap on a rookie deal and re-assess after next season with a new coaching staff. The current staff and scheme is so dysfunctional that I don’t believe you can properly assess anyone, let alone the starting quarterback. Drake Maye and Caleb Williams both have flaws that an organization like the Bears will not overcome. There should be two strategies going into this draft. Option A should be MHJ and the best OL available with the second first round pick. Option B is trading back if some team is willing to sell the farm for Williams or Maye.

[–] thejonesinator@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Have we fired anyone yet?

[–] tallslim1960@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Matt Canada fired by the Steelers. Interest in our OC spot?

[–] PUfelix85@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Please no. I don't want that evil in our Clubhouse. I say fire Goatsie and let Eberflus call plays on offense as well. He seems to be doing such a great job calling the defense (just ask him).

[–] tallslim1960@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Whoever was calling the defense the 2nd half against the Lions should be drawn and quartered. They were so badly outcoached, especially in the last 5 minutes it hurt. Not ONCE did they blitz? They didn't do anything to make Goff uncomfortable and he picked them apart.

[–] N0S0UP_4U@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Your daily reminder that Velus Jones is still on the roster

[–] lkn240@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

As bad as it seems sometimes - at least we aren't the Jets.

Zach Wilson has now been demoted to 3rd string and I still think he might be the best QB on that roster.

Tim Boyle is going to start? He makes Tyson Bagent look like Patrick Mahomes.

[–] Foxstarry@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Just to be curious, I’ve been checking comments percentage wise on the fields support and fields hate on the sub over time. Support is about majority 55-60% but leans towards a “if he’s good and the new coach wants him, keep him”. Comments originate from regular posters to rare posters.

Hate is pretty consistent, as in the constant comments from the same accounts all day everyday, at about 20% and leans more towards “doesn’t deserve to be in the league”.

Support leans more broadly into any post or thread.

Hate leans more towards specific posts and thread and stick together to like minded comments.

As an extra I’ve been looking for hardcore field supporters but they strictly exist in a about sub 1% of comments and rarely comment or very rarely post.

Method: Comments measured by comment, not by account. As in one account making three comments counts as three comments.

I know this might be a bit of a hot take, but I don't think Eberflus is the problem.

I think Getsy needs to go, but Eberflus can't call both the offense and defense all on his own, as well as ~~coach~~manage the team.

He needs to find someone who knows how to utilize Justin Fields and the weapons we have on offense to the fullest, but I don't think that person is on the coaching staff right now. Maybe it could be the QB coach (Andrew Janocko), but I don't think he has enough experience for Eberflus to trust him with that kind of responsibility.

[–] CheapoA2@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I completely disagree that Eberflus isnt a problem, but even if we table that and say Getsy is somehow exclusively responsible for the Bears being a bottom 5 team this year, how do you expect a hot seat coach/regime to replace Getsy with a viable OC candidate? No one is going to wa ant to come to the Bears to be fired after a year.

[–] PUfelix85@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The thing is, with the weapons our offense could have next season if the Bears draft a few pieces like an O-Lineman and a decent WR to complement Moore, the Bears should be able to find an OC that fits the plan. The defense isn't perfect, but they have been serviceable for the past few games. We have a really strong run defense at the moment, and if they could put together the pass rush, then the DBs would have an easier time too. I can't name a good candidate, but I am sure there is someone out there, probably at the college level, that would be a good fit for Fields, and if the Bears want to move on from Fields, then they could easily pick an OC that can mold their new QB.

Coach Eberflus is a first time head coach and is still learning how that actually works compared to being a DC. He has made a lot of mistakes over that past two years, but I think he has started to find some kind of rhythm. I know we can't give him too much more time to prove himself, but when the Bears picked him as HC they new he didn't have the experience and that there would be growing pains.

My question is, who do Bears fans think would be a better head coach and is available right now? We already have to replace our
DC. Do we gut the whole coaching staff, again? That would be what, the fifth head coaching change and the sixth offensive coordinator since 2012. We need to have some continuity in our coaching staff at some point. Building a locker room and culture takes more than two years to do. I don't think firing everyone is the smart move. We are already in the middle of a rebuild. Let's not tear it all down and start over again. And I don't think that is Poles' plan either, or he would have been selling at the trade deadline instead of looking for pieces for next year.

[–] rustysurf83@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m terrified that they are going to scratch out 6ish wins and keep Eberflus. He absolutely IS the problem. Just look at his last presser. I don’t care what you think of Fields, good, bad, indifferent. There’s no way a HC should throw ANY player under the bus like that. He’s now in charge of the defense, because apparently he has a penchant for hiring multiple coaches that can’t professionally in the workplace, and look at his decisions last week.
