Like "oh dear let's tread carefully", then starts monologuing in a way that is obviously what an alt right Nazi would imagine a centrist is like.
"I think that the... Trans issue... Is very complex. We have a lot to think about, especially when it comes to... Women's sports. I support women's rights... In a way that empowers them to live the life they value, like if that's traditional family values..."
They think everything is so incredibly nuanced meanwhile a real leftist will say something like trans rights are women's rights, and that's that.
True centrism doesn't really have a take on any issues. Trying to 'sound' centrist whilst you're not is always gonna be either watered down left wing of right wing stuff.
Also it's wholly possible for someone to be leftist on one issue (immigrants have the right to their best life anywhere in earth and wealthy countries have a duty to help people in need, for instance) while be right-wing on another (governments shouldn't interfere with the free market).
Mostly true centrist statements are like 'anyone should be able to believe or identify as anything they want without fear of prosecution' woth the added subtext of saying 'as long as they don't bother me with it'.
There is no "true centrism" regarding the biggest and most important issues because often the choice is between doing something or refusing to do something.
Refusing to do something because one doesn't feel strongly one way or the other is still a choice, and "centrists" think that they're different from the ones who do nothing out of an active choice.
A centrists who chooses "don't pass gun control because I'm not sure it's fair to the market the way it's written, maybe let's revisit and revise" is still choosing a right-wing position. A centrist who chooses "don't pass this immigration reform because it hurts asylum seekers even though it's targeted at criminal offenders" is choosing a left-wing position.
Choosing to not make a choice is still a choice, and again, with large social issues it's unfortunately "with us or against us."
I think in general you're right about this, but 'doing something' can be as simple as voting. The 'with us or against us' view is pretty much in a nutshell what the current state of political polarisation is.
Maybe I'm one of those passive centrists but I do believe a lot of the hot button issues contain a lot more nuance than outlets make it appear.
For instance, I believe Europe is facing a big immigration issue but that's mostly due to strong social programs making it an attractive destination for people who don't actually need asylum, those ruining it for those that do. But the right is using all immigrants as scapegoats for issues regarding housing and buy power. The left just argues for the humane treatment and tolerant attitude towards all.
And keep in mind that this is not the medium to do real public discussion like this so this is already a pretty flat way of reasoning, I could write 17 paragraphs of more nuance and what I do and don't agree with.
One unequivocal opinion I do have is that people in power have a way of steering public opinion in a way that benefits them and that none of us are immune to propaganda.
Also the Overton window (especially in the US) is so far right that any "centrist" position is just diet republican. Or they're one of those "not very political" "both sides" kinda person that just regurgitates whatever fox news bullshit they saw scrolling Facebook.
It should really be called self-centrism

They’re fine. They’re just people.”

I think most left leaning folks wouldn't remotely compromise on their ideals, so they're not going to water down their views, they're just going to be up front about it because fuck giving an inch to the right, whereas the right are far more willing to compromise on their "deeply held beliefs".
It's less that they're willing to compromise, and more that they know a lot of their beliefs are abhorrent to the general population, but they still hold them. So they have to hide their true feelings because they know that people would reject them if they express those beliefs.
Evidently they even try lying for months on end, pretending not to be Nazis
