If Narnia is real, the most important thing for all people is owning a wardrobe and keeping the hinges on it.
Showerthoughts
A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:
- Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
- When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
- More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else
Rules
- All posts must be showerthoughts
- The entire showerthought must be in the title
- No politics
- If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
- A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
- Posts must be original/unique
- Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS
If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
Yup. So you think God and Heaven are naturally quite important so you go to school to specialize in Bible study, and there you learn the Bible is crazy contradictory patchwork written by men serving the needs of their society at the time and that's all religion ever is, so then you start thinking about how you're going to make a living and you might decide to leave the church, or you may decide you like the cushy life and don´t mind lying to people every Sunday who are asking you to lie to them, who are paying you to lie to them.
If existence is infinite there is no difference whatsoever between heaven and hell. The idea of "happiness forever" is a 4 year old child's conception of something desirable, and shows absolutely no awareness of what it means to exist.
And before someone starts in with the "You'll be altered so that heaven will be perfect forever", you've destroyed any meaning of it - if you're going to be made to enjoy it, you could just as easily be made to enjoy hell. The whole concept is stupid.
Heaven is the desperate hope of the tired who don't need eternal bliss - they need a break and a chance to actually live.
You just lack imagination.
Heaven is two goth girlfriends who alternate between loving you and ignoring you. Occasionally they step on you.
Won't find that in any philosophy book because philosophers are prudes.
People just don't understand heaven. It's not infinite time, it's eternity - without time
The way I see it, heaven would be a nice home, a place of reunions and rest. But what is the point of being unchanging?
Also, what does it mean to bask in God's light? How can that equally happen in a place outside of time, but also is possible on Earth?
I think the whole concept has been completely warped from what Jesus actually said
Christianity went to some weird places when Constantine merged it with the Roman religion. The common interpretation makes no sense
Without time, nothing can occur.
Let's see what Jesus said about heaven in Matthew 13:
The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.
It's a metaphor where believers are the wheat and nonbelievers are the weeds. Both are allowed to grow, but only the wheat goes back to the farmer.
Later in the chapter, Jesus explains it explicitly:
40 “As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42 They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let them hear.
He tells a similar parable with fish instead of crops:
47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Christian "love" hinges on threat of eternal punishment.
Then there are parables he doesn't explain:
31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”
33 He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.”
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
In Matthew 6, he emphasizes that you'll have eternal treasures in heaven:
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Sounds materialistic.
Jesus gets way too much credit. He said some stupid, deadly bullshit. He was a liar and a hypocrite.
I think the whole concept has been completely warped from what Jesus actually said
Jesus made it sound like a pleasant vacation, a banquet, a feast.
The problem is that heaven collapses under the weight of eternity if you think about it (as you are doing). I don't think it's some kind of corruption or "going to a weird place" to reconcile the idea of an placid idyll with eternity; it's just a place things naturally go when you consider the implications.
And if heaven is not real, we should focus on the lives we are living.
Any religion that claims a happy afterlife exists is a death cult. "Your baby is in heaven now! Why aren't you happy?"
The sun is important, but I'm not sure how much we need to understand it. You do need to eat the food that it ultimately provides though. Understanding the food chain is useful but plenty of humans can persist and breed successfully - at least in the short term - with little more than a rudimentary understanding of a very small part of it.
Its wild to me people dont understand heaven and hell is an allegory for perspective.
God created the integers, everything else is the work of man*
*Except infinity, which Good invented to punish those who don’t understand math, and reward those who do
Everything hinges on an if?
"If A is true, everything hinges on B" does not imply that everything, independent of A or not, hinges on B.
Well, every theoretical discussion falls apart if you just cast aside the assumptions of the scenario.
"If humans could fly, would more of us live in trees?"
"If?!? I'm not building a treehouse based on if!!!"
