Still on a 1060. Refusing to upgrade until GPU prices return to reality.

[–] Scrollone@feddit.it 3 points 1 hour ago

Me too. I'll just wait.

There's a whole backlog of old games anyway between Steam and straight out piracy. There are so many old games that a life wouldn't be enough to play them all.

*laughs in AMD

(I know they're not that much better but they're so much more well supported in Linux it's absurd. NVIDIA only started getting more support that was focused on AI, which is cool and all, local AI is all right, but no very useful in everyday context.)

Fr, how anyone still pays extra for Nvidia's bullshit is crazy to me.

I switched from Nvidia and Intel to Amd Amd for my newer PC. Couldn't be happier. No issues. Better prices too.

AMD has software for both its processors and gpus. So nothing to trade off as far as I can tell.

Latest rumor is that NVIDIA is making too much with AI cards. They won't release a new consumer line for a couple more years.

It isn't worth spending any waffers on the high end nodes for chips that offer such relatively low margins.

Sometimes I think that I'd like to buy a new PC

then I remember that the majority of my hours played is on titles that don't need a better PC

This isn't the 90s / 2000s when games were scarce and you needed to upgrade to have something to play because new stuff was so much better. There are tons of very good games out there that will most likely run on everything.

Good games I played recently-ish:

  • Balatro (casual 600 hours total)
  • Noita (maybe 500 hours though you wouldn't be able to tell because I suck)
  • Guacamelee! (actually from my backlog)
  • Animal Well
  • Clover Pit
  • Cuphead (another backlog title)
  • Opus Magnum
  • Baba is you

None of this means that no good game requires good hardware, but there are lots of good titles to enjoy on absolute potatoes

I'd like to add Hollow Knight and Slilsong to your list.

Also Noita is my favorite game that I'm terrible at, lol. I come back to it every once in a while if I'm feeling to good about myself. Nothing will humble you faster than accidentally exploding yourself in new an interesting ways.

I bought a RTX 3060 12gb a few weeks ago from OfferUp for $200. Sweet deal.
