AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
It's the same thing, for very different reasons. Sanders is, I fully believe, being genuine when he suggests that development needs to wait for the law to catch up.
OpenAI, on the other hand, have embraced the call for a pause because they're out of money and can't admit it. They need to scale back on their staggering training costs, but their entire pitch to their investors has always been "We can get to AGI if we just keep training hard enough."
Agreed. I do think Bernie is genuine because he seems to have always been genuine. However, there are many US politicians calling for data center moratoriums and the like because it’s politically beneficial to them at the moment. One year moratoriums until they’re re-elected and can reopen the flood gates. My own Pennsylvania governor is a good example. I think Shapiro is mostly good for our state but until recently, he was all in on data center build out. I don’t want a moratorium. I want our governments to hold these corporations accountable for the environmental harm that they cause, make them pay their taxes, and regulate the heck out of them so that opening a new data center and running an AI company isn’t easy.
You can't trust politicians because they say they are "against" data centers. Desantis, for instance, a huge cheerleader for data centers, sees which way the wind is blowing and is proposing data centers now have to apply and data centers will be decided on a case-by-case basis. You'd be a fool to think it's anything but a hoop made of fig leaves for companies to jump through so DeSantis can position himself for the moment.
