If the browns somehow win the AFC North (they’re only a 1/2 game back) then yeah I 100% agree.
NFL

The last defensive player to win MVP literally changed how the game was played. As good as Myles is, it's just not how things work in today's NFL.
It’s just not going to happen.
2009, 2012, and 2014 kind of established that defenders cant get it anymore.
At least its looking like true QB only now, rather than RB being the only non-QB exception.
Donald in 2018 too
Mahomes threw for 50 something TDs that year as a second year starter. He was going to win that award no matter how good a defensive player was
The reason it’s a discussion this year is the lack of elite QB play. It’s not comparable to those seasons
Poor kirkland
See I think JJ losing the MVP in 2012 and 2014 is kind of looked back upon now as missed opportunities, maybe it’s just the kind of media I follow but I think if they had to do it over again a lot of people would have changed their votes.
Also there’s never quite been a season like this where the progress of defenses have been so stark, and the MVP field from the QB position has been so bad. The story of the season is that defenses finally stepped up to the plate after years of what seemed like exponential growth on offense, and Garrett is the best defensive player in the league on the best defense in the league
Rodgers was more valuable in 2014 than JJ Watt. He did more for his team to win games
Unbelievable to me that people think JJ should have been MVP on a team that didn’t make the playoffs.
According to pro football JJ wasn’t even the most valuable defender that year (Sherman). It’s pretty hard to argue against a RB that came within 9 yards of breaking the single season rushing record while also helping his team win 7 more games.
2014 Rodgers deserved it over Watt, that was an insane season he put up. Much better season than any qb in the league right now is having
Yeah it’s not about how good the defensive player was necessarily in a given year. It’s the combination of a lack of clear cut number 1 QB + insane defensive player this year.
He was basically the clear cut best qb and had the upper hand over Romo
The only non-QB that makes any sense this year is McCaffrey, and even so I don't think he should get it. QB is such an inherently valuable position that non-QBs winning almost doesn't make any sense. Hell, at least half of the QBs in the league are more important to their team succeeding than any one defensive player could ever be.
MVP really needs to be split between QBs and everyone else.
MVQB isn't a bad idea.
It seems like the league and media are trying to speak this into existence for some reason.
I vote we give Garrett MVP + DaRon Bland DPOY, no bias
After his pick six last night I'm worried Myles will miss another DPOY. Besides the INTs, has Bland been a shut down corner?
Entering the game against Washington, he'd allowed more than 50 yards just once all season. 23 catches on 41 targets, 230 yards and 1 TD (that dime from Hurts to Devonta). Funnily enough, I think he allowed a decent amount of yards vs. the Commanders. (these are the Pro Football Reference numbers)
Anyone but hurts and Mahomes please, neither of them deserve it
Dak if Daron doesn’t get another defensive TD. Gilmore won dpoy with 6 ints and two tds. Daron is already at 7 and 5 tds and best grade against among CBs with over 50 snaps
Gilmore didn't win that DPOY because of his picks. He won it because he'd shut down half of the field. It takes a lot for a cb to win DPOY.
I don't know man. Breaking longstanding NFL records with 6 games left in a season feels like a lot.
That’s right NFL QBs, Daron Bland is not a shutdown corner. Please keep throwing his way. Thank you.
Is he really that good? Surprised I haven’t heard his name til last night. They filled a massive hole with Diggs out.
Well, in all of NFL history no one has ever returned 5 interceptions for touchdowns in a single season and Bland did it in 11 games. As a backup.
Real question - is he having a better year than Maxx Crosby?
Only QBs can, mathematically, be MVPs
Much as I love Garrett, a defensive player MVP is nearly impossible. Argument can be made, but it'll still go to a QB, as QBs are the most valuable position.
If jj watt didn't win it that one year he was crazy good on defense and was catching tds as a tight end then myles has no shot.
No qb this season, is better than 2014 Rodgers, Rodgers deserved it that year because he put up insane numbers and won 12 games. Watt only won 9
The MVP field in 2012 and 2014 wasn’t nearly this bad
He didn’t make the playoffs that’s why he didn’t win it
I don’t even know that he has a shot at defensive MVP this year. Imagine if DaRon Bland somehow manages another pick 6. It would have to be him. It probably should be him right now.
We all know that MVP is a QB award now. He’d have to at least break TJ and Strahan’s sack record to be in league MVP conversation
This is why I think we need a split award. MLB has the Cy Young for the best pitcher, and the MVP for every other position. You can win both in the same year as a pitcher, but you have to hit an even higher standard for that. So whether it’s Most Outstanding Quarterback or “winning the Montana Award” or whatever, you get a designated QB award and open up MVP to WRs, RBs, DBs, Dlinemen, hell maybe even an olineman if somebody has that crazy a season. And doing it like that wouldn’t even force you to get rid of OPotY or DPotY either, so why not?
