Not good money, and I have to do this sort of stuff instead of more legitimate art because it is the only thing that pays (barely) enough for me to make rent.

Yes, usually for Patreon, and sometimes the author commissions a good artist to make a piece for their short story (or vice versa).
There can be decent money in it, but itβs mostly a hobby or side job type deal.
Of course the better your writing the better youβll do.
