The national lottery in the UK does a lot of funding for charity and other good causes. I know the chances of me winning are essentially zero, but I'm not playing with the expectation of winning.

If any of those causes would otherwise be funded by the government, it's a scam.

You might not be playing to win, but other people are out of desperation. Instead of charity, why not allocate taxes to solve the root cause creating the need for charity?

I think in the US the funds usually go to education

How long until the lottery isn't actually winning a bunch of money, but being selected to be an unwilling organ donor to the rich, ala The Island? 🤔

Meme format incorrect, your assertions are invalid

Rigged. How can California have the biggest winners the past few years back to back? F outta here!

I once watched a libertarian party debate (maybe 2012 election?) and one guy called the lottery a “tax on stupid people.” That really just shows how divorced from reality these people are.

Yet... Is it not accurate? Why does that make one disconnected? The chances of a win in the lottery are so miniscule that you are basically pissing away money.

gambling addiction isn't stupidity. Also, a lot of people gamble on the lottery in desperation. It's more akin to a desperation tax.

This is just the popular clip. There are so many worse moments in their debates

I call it a "tax on ignorance" instead
