for those not aware: this is not an actual forum user commenting on the game. this is a fake review included as flavor in the consumer-stylized "store" (your equipment/outfit/talent menus dressed up in hypercapitalist satire)

so is it on the nose? too much so? are we overthinking it? whose to say. the hypercapitalist satire has already had a recuperative effect if you are seeing this message; you already bought the game, so maybe these questions are irrelevant

helldivers is like starship troopers but somehow making even more fun of fascism but fascists are stupid pieces of shit

[–] jack@hexbear.net 22 points 1 year ago (1 children)

probably, Helldivers are literally Verhooeven Starship Trooper fash; this review is an in-game joke on a piece of equipment

Gotta be a bit.

As stated it's a fake review, the reviewer is a made up person; this HelldiVR_88 character likely sits in their basement and acts tough on the Hyper-Twitter, too cowardly to actually enlist.

It should be noted; The reviews are explicitly fake. There's a disclaimer that the Super Earth Ministry of Truth compiled accurate reviews from an average of reviews that patriotic citizens would provide.

Yes.

On a side note, if someone born in 1988 hasn't found out by now that using it in a name is a bad idea they are going to find out soon.

The game has a hug emote and it reminded me that some people (incorrectly) join the military to find a semblance of community/human connection.

One of my favorite moments in gaming last year was killing the self-titled Final God of Pain in Destiny 2 and then slow-dancing with my partner on his corpse

In Japanese internet slang 888 is for clapping, poor choice.

[–] zifnab25@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

8 is also an Eastern lucky number.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago

Didn't know that.

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

what's the connection? like a pun between the word 'eight' and 'clap'?

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

What does 888 mean in Japanese slang?

You'll see this on a number of forums and video streaming websites, and may even get it in a text from time to time. Similarly, you might see someone get praised with うぽつ (thank you for uploading) or 888 (pronounced as ぱちぱちぱち, the sound of snapping or clapping), which means “clap clap clap.”

Dunno how true this is since I don't speak the language, but I often see 888 in the comments on Japanese sides of Youtube and Nico Video.

This guy has read every last Heinlein novel and never once caught a whiff of irony.

It's just meant to be a young kid (born in 1988)
