That's not an actual argument I've ever heard and I'm an anarchist myself, it usually goes more like:

Voting is a waste of time especially the more disenfranchised you are, mutual aid lasts longer and does more for people around you in the short term, in the long term you can build community get organized, and bargain for more than what simply voting can get you.

Personally that's not a bad argument, see I'm living in Israel and my town's going through gentrification, and the state I'm living under is fascist and the fascism is so normalized, not because of people like me refusing to vote, but because of liberals who were never so different from the fascists, constantly giving them ground, always bargaining for the bare minimum.

The only people actually getting anything done that is remotely positive are activists, like the people protesting to stop the genocide, and getting involved physically with sabotaging fascist efforts to stop humanitarian aid from getting into gaza.

Or at least that's how it was months ago, i haven't found it in me to listen to the news on quite a while, so what do i know.

[–] BlackRoseAmongThorns@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Actually when my system does slow down when i multitask too hard, it doesn't hang (given there is no write IO), and even running a simple application would hang if i have write IO in the background.

I understand if that's a hard one to solve, I've been facing this for months and been trying to research on it and coming up with nothing. Thank you, still.

Small problem with that line of thinking, though it is understandable, multitasking is smooth, unless there is a write IO operation, and the same is true for just running a single tab firefox or LyX (latex editor), so it's probably not ram usage.

For this reason i disabled anything that might do writes in the background except for timeshift, and i saw massive improvements in responsiveness.

Thanks for your input, still.

I have a suspicion my machine might be waiting when it has write IO operations, because it doesn't heat up or make any noise, I've been looking for a way to make a fake io operation or something like that, to confirm this.

Update: ran e4defrag check, said no defragmentation necessary, all scores were low.

I was told this laptop is about 10 years old, and I've got it from someone who is 23 years old, so i don't doubt what i was told about it.

So it should be very suspicious that it is that slow, and also, i can usually multitask pretty well with it, so it is very surprising that it hangs like that.

I really hope i get help troubleshooting this because i have a feeling it shouldn't be this bad.

I should probably check defragging options on linux regardless, thank you for the time you took answering this :)

I've set up an old laptop with Linux mint some months ago, and while the laptop's speed is fine when there are no disk write, even a very small write can cause other applications to hang until it is done, and i can also tell because i have an IO led so whenever it is on i know that i can't really interact with stuff whenever it's on.

SMART status doesn't seem to report anything, (tested some weeks ago, but issue was always present), but i'm willing to test again and show screenshots.

I'll show some maybe relevant information, note that my Linux fs is mounted on sda7.

some forums online suggested looking at /etc/fstab:

/etc/fstab

If there is anything else that is relevant, I'd like to know, and thanks for any help.

She wouldn't care, most likely, you know who will care though? Women and trans women, some of which have already heard similar things hurled at them as insults.

Don't try to use transphobia "for good" it won't work and only harm the people around you.

I really hope iced.rs gets better on accessibility, because i really enjoyed trying it :)

Saved your comment, hopefully won't take too long before i find time to read that book :)

I really don't like this "no true scotsman" flavored meme, the profit incentive destroys valuable research by limiting resources to replications of past experiments (as soon as something is profitable, you must not disprove it for a fear of retaliation from companies promoting said something), this is systemic, not an individual level problem, get rid of "bad scientists" and more will be propped up.

I do like the sentiment of the meme though, more more replication is needed.

Would you recommend the book?

Not really, generators have weird truthiness, i don't remember if they evaluate to true or false, but they cannot be checked for emptiness so they default to either always true or always false.

for a sec i thought i was in a "data is a warcrime" community

Got an old laptop from a friend I'd like to rejuvenate, the plan is to set up a light distro so it wouldn't be as slow as it is right now with windows 10.

Now, I'm aware windows updates can fuck up a dual boot system, so i have a few questions about how to minimize the threat of that happening.

What i think of doing is running a few scans to check the disk, then setting up Linux Mint, because it is beginner friendly, and (relatively) light weight.

What I'd need help with is trusted guides and also tips for setting up dual booting, I'm sure I'll need to do disk partitioning and I've done that before but I'd still want to make sure I'm doing it correctly.

Any help would be welcome.

Been in a relationship for a year, since early in the relationship my partner has been suffering with chronic back pain. This pain is almost always present, this causes breakdowns multiple times a week, especially on weekends.

I've been having a hard time helping her manage her pain and being there for her, it reoccures so much that I'm starting to feel myself becoming apathetic towards her, and sometimes outright cold.

I haven't really been getting a chance to rest from being emotionally available, or even socially available (even though life circumstance already caused me to basically halt all social life). And i haven't really had a weekend this past months that i could use to rest instead of being on call and hearing her cry most of the day.

I feel like I'm pouring from an empty cup and that I don't have any other choice, otherwise I'd be leaving her to deal with it herself.

It feels like it's going to be the end of our relationship, any advice?

p.s. we're a man-woman relationship, young adults, both of us not really experienced in relationships, if that's any help.

Been 2 months since the update but I don't see any news about code editor support for the new syntax.

This kind of makes sense, i don't expect code editor support to pop up so fast, but i was at least hoping to hear some news about it.

The PEP in question: PEP 695
