I have my Linux laptop open at work next to their windows machine and the difference when I switch between them is ridiculous.

Only joking. We're offgrid anyway, so unless they can figure out a tiny, cheap and quiet one I can buy off the shelf some time soon I will be solar for a while to come!

Panels have become ridiculously cheap per kwh. I was looking for some more recently and they had halved in price in the space of a few years while everything else has almost doubled.

I'd love to see more innovation in mechanical storage.

Yeah, I think you mis-read my comment and that we agree :)

Man, just when I'd bought all those solar panels.

I think their point is that in a large enough group there will be people who you cease to regard as peers.

I think a much more stable option would be morals defining your identity and being loyal to that.

I'm glad you posted the question - good to think about.

I always forget about this until I see it on Fridays.

I will always upvote it.

I think that getting caught up in objections to housing development is a terrible diversion and a waste. Look up a housing estate on a map with satellite view and zoom out so you can compare it to the vast areas which are sprayed with pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilisers and where grazing destroys biodiversity. All of the above is currently subsidised by taxpayers.

The scope for winning environmentally is enormous in the countryside but instead all the attention gets absorbed by residential planning where the impact is the smallest.

The government should be changing agricultural policy for the environment and wildlife, creating local & accessible nature reserves and forests for the politics and building houses for the people.

That's the spirit 👍

I agree. More parents should take it seriously.

This an impossible choice, so I'll take two: Ernie & Bert :)

That debt will be bigger the longer it is left before nationalising it. The situation shouldn't have been left to fester for so long.

Just saw on Masto that Resynthesizer will be compatible with GIMP 3.0

I think this is great news. Apart from all the upgrades we'll get in 3.0, it will be an opportunity to create a buzz around GIMP. The more functional it is, the better that buzz will be :)

#GIMP #FOSS #Resynthesizer

I often want to read output from the terminal from the beginning but by default I have to scroll back up. This can be laborious when there is a lot of text. Is there anything I can do about this?

Thanks :)

I just came across a cool plugin for batch editing and exporting layers, for GIMP 3.0 RC1 onwards. It's called 'Batcher' and you can find it here.

I just tested it out and it's super flexible and works really well.

Must-have plugin and great to see people jumping on it making new plugins for GIMP 3.X

If I want to install and use a different desktop environment than came with my distro, what (if any) problems can I expect to encounter?

I currently use Debian with GNOME and I want an optimised system for music production and graphic design. As far as I can tell, the two main options I have are to make some tweaks to my current system's configuration (rt kernel, swap use, cpu behaviour and others) or to switch to a dedicated media distro which is configured already. The creative distros that I like the look of don't use GNOME though.

Which option will be easiest for me?

What are some of the easiest ways for a beginner to make their system untable when they start tinkering with it?

Does anyone know of an Android app for measuring decibels/loudness/volume?

I only need to measure sounds relatively, so it doesn't need to be accurate.

Does anyone here use Starlabs computers? I'm thinking of buying one of their laptops and I'm interested in how well their products are supported in the long term. Specifically, firmware updates and spare parts & repairs.

Thanks

GIMP 3.0 is over 96% complete! The GIMP team got sick at the Libre Arts conference over the summer, hence the setback to the release schedule but they are now back making good progress.

Along with non-destructive editing and a colour overhaul we've all been waiting for, longstanding critics of the UI/UX will be pleased to hear that GIMP are setting up a UX repository and are looking to build a dedicated team of designers to develop this.

All of these things look set to make the GIMP project feel a lot more current and dynamic. I can't wait!

And if anyone wants to help out it looks like testing/reporting, donations and updating the help manual are all welcomed by the project at the moment.
