Hey, @fossilesque. I love all the links you post, but NY Times links are paywalled. Any way you could find an alternate source for those? I'm not trying to complain, I just always have to Google another source.

There was a bird I heard as a child, a very distinctive song, I can remember it so clearly, and yet no matter what time of year I go to the place where I grew up (my mother still lives there and I only live an hour away), I never hear that bird song. I don't know if the species is just wiped out from the area, but this does not give me hope.

Fun fact re the parasitic lice: Our head lice evolved with us, but we inherited pubic lice from gorillas much later.

I'm not saying a human and a gorilla got down together, but that's a lot more fun than thinking some idiot slept in a gorilla nest.

I don't know that I'm smarter than average, but I do think it was smart of my wife and I to wait until our 30s to have a child. We got to spend our 20s as an independent couple and enjoy it and then, when we were settling down, we got to raise a child, the best thing that ever happened to me, when we were able to do so without sacrificing too much.

The Power Glove. It's so rad.

National Geographic Magazine was first published in 1888. 135 years ago. It's an American institution as much as the Smithsonian or Yellowstone National Park. Disney could absolutely afford to run it at a loss just to keep that institution alive, but profit above all in this world.

I realize the magazine was already a shadow of what it once was, but even a shadow is better than nothing.

We've entered a new era where the few consolidated media companies left in the world will make anything not profitable, like science communication, go away.

That's the gritty truth.
