That's odd, today's the release of the game on all platforms and they give it away on EGS.

Rationale

For some background information on this: A year ago or more, we sent Epic an alpha, and they loved it. It was the first time we'd shared and received feedback on the game, so it was quite the morale booster for the team. They have a program where there's a kind of "game of the week" on the storefront. We were offered to take part in it for modest compensation, which was an exciting prospect for us, as they typically reach quite a large number of players with this. And we want nothing more than to bring our game to as many people as possible. It's for a very limited time, though.

Game development is a tough business (especially now). We’re hoping to reach a massive audience who will become champions for the game and help it spread through word of mouth, ultimately driving sales.

We hope fans will support us so that we can finance our next title, as our ambition is to build a franchise of truly crazy and ambitious games. 😊 Deliver At All Costs is just the beginning, we have something even crazier in the pipeline, though we’re many years away from that. 🤫

You'd think he'd be better media trained by now. But no, here goes the foot in the mouth.

No announcement that I'm aware of. Just me hoping.

Unfortunately coming from Vermintide 2, I find Darktide to be a step down in most aspects. I went in with my usual coop group at release, expecting this game to last us for hundreds of hours, like VT2 did. We stopped in the tens of hours instead.

I check in every once in a while, but find no compelling reason to keep playing. The one thing DT has over VT2 is that the combat system is more refined. Other than that... No compelling characters, no storyline to speak of, forgettable locations, randomized shops, bad reward loop, no solo play nor proper bot support, ... I could go on.

They have had to rework so much of DT that they added more actual content to VT2 in the meantime. Now I'm hoping for a VT3 bringing the best of both worlds.

Driving manual is not particularly complicated, but it will require you to focus a lot of attention on it at first. Since you also have to cope with with differences in driving regulations, this will put you and your passengers more at risk than necessary.

It takes time (~tens of hours) to build the muscle memory so that it becomes natural. For a vacation in the short term, you should go ahead with your plan to rent an automatic.

No review bombing for the wicked

I don't see the pattern of a review bombing in Steam reviews... Looks like a game getting released very soon in early access and failing to gain traction.

It's sitting on my wishlist and I'm waiting for it to get to 1.0, but their update cadence has been very slow. Now they are saying their studio does not have the funds to complete the game.

I do hope they turn this around, but as a consumer I am very wary when it comes to titles in early access, and even more when the studio goes radio silent for months.

What a roller coaster of a ride ! At least they have a fighting chance, and (hopefully for them) did not take too big a financial risk.

Most of the time it's because client-side anti-cheat is not being well or at all supported on Linux.

For instance Roblox used to run on Linux through launchers such as Grapejuice or Vinegar. However the devs now explicitely block Roblox player on Linux due to a large quantity of cheaters coming from there according to their stats. Since their actual Linux userbase is minuscule compared to other platforms, they just chose go the easy (and probably financially sane) route.

As for Fortnite, it's all about the ROI baby !

Why is Fortnite still not playable on Steam Deck?

If we only had a few more programmers. It’s the Linux problem. I love the Steam Deck hardware. Valve has done an amazing job there; I wish they would get to tens of millions of users, at which point it would actually make sense to support it.

Don't get me wrong I love my Steam Deck... But with its mass-market appeal the Switch 2 is going to steamroll over the handheld gaming device market.

As streamlined as it is, the Steam Deck is sometimes finnicky due to it being a PC (which is an amazing thing for tinker-minded folks). Plus it cannot play some of the most popular PC games on the planet (Fortnite, LoL, Roblox, etc).

Windows handhelds are even more niche, because dealing with Windows on handhelds... Man that takes some serious dedication.

I would wager that Nintendo is going to sell at least 20x more units as the whole handheld gaming PCs lineup combined.

Giant Bomb deserves more than a thread hanging off the Polygon story post.

Agreed. Giant Bomb pioneered so much in games media, and for it to end like that is such a shame.

As far as I am concerned, the GB I loved was already struggling after Alex, Brad and Vinny left ; and it ended for good when Jeff Gerstmann was fired abruptly (again !). This news still saddens me however, and I wonder what will be the legacy of GB down the road.

I did the fix today, with a small strip of electric tape folded in 2. Hopefully it holds long enough to get to the Steam Deck 2 🤞

I am aware, thanks. I did the whole noisy fan replacement a year ago 😁 https://sh.itjust.works/post/20372232 That worked really well and I am glad I did it.

My launch LCD Steam Deck is unfortunately now afflicted with a power button issue. It amounts to the power button being unresponsive ~9 times out of 10 (and getting worse). It has been reported on, but has no definitive fix as far as I can tell.

My fixes attempt so far have been:

  • Squirt isopropyl alcohol (also contact cleaner later on) from the outside (suggested in [https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/vlv3px/psa_how_i_fixed_my_steam_decks_unresponsive_power/]) : no perceptible change.
  • Open up the casing and try pushing the board back into a better position (as a proposed fix in [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=123jykFjF50]) : felt like an improvement, but did not stick for very long.
  • Mostly I have been working around the issue by using the wake on Bluetooth feature from the SteamOS preview channel and using a Switch Pro controller (because it's not BLE) or a headset. This has been pretty reliable but for obvious reasons this is not ideal (and also will not work after a shutdown).

This is an in-depth analysis of the problem : [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAZtSyyx-ww]

Did someone try a lasting fix for the issue without soldering ? Maybe putting a piece of plastic or electrical tape between the button and the switch helps (like in [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhwThw6Ke-U]) ?

Edit 26/04/2025: I put a piece of electric tape between the button and the switch. and there is a very tangible improvement. Not every button press works but most of them do so far. I'll see about the longevity of this fix.

Patch 01.001.104 (store.steampowered.com)

Only seen this happen once in my 400h of playing.

Cool demake concept video with very strong Metal Slug vibes (also the video ends with an ad for a new Metal Slug).

Reportedly, in patch 01.000.403.

Now that my Steam Deck LCD has been relieved of his duties as a daily driver desktop PC, I finally went ahead and replaced the Delta fan with a Huaying one. It turned out to be relatively easy to do ; and lo and behold, it is indeed quieter.

Recent adopters may or may not know there was a medium-sized kerfuffle about disparities in noise profiles of early Steam Deck units. It was proved and narrowed down to a difference between 2 fan models (see Gamers Nexus detailed analysis).

Obviously the one I got was a "bad" one, emitting a high pitched noise when running at full speed. I did not find it unbearable but it was still not ideal, particularly when using the SD in quiet environments.

Took me 2 years to get to the point where I figured it was an acceptable risk to attempt the replacement. How many of you did the same and kicked the Delta out of your unit ?

Well, shit. Unfortunate news from the Vinegar Discord: Roblox will block Wine in future releases.

This is going to end my "Steam Deck as a primary desktop PC for my kid" experiment.

Nothing particularly original, but it's mine, so here goes.

  • Earfun Free 2: good for listening to podcasts on the go.
  • House keys: well, duh.
  • Olight imini: handy and really tiny flashlight.
  • Mini push dagger: oldest thing in there, got it more than 20 years ago. Says "United" & "Taiwan" on the sheath, so it likely is from United Cutlery.
  • Kershaw Launch 11: my current all-time favorite pocket knife. Small enough to fit in a 5th pocket (but not "deep-carry"), yet handles really well with my not-too-meaty hands.
  • Bellroy Card Sleeve Black: small enough to keep credit cards and such in regular pants' front pockets.
  • Zippo Lighter Spectrum: really a fidget toy for me since I do not smoke, so pretty though !
  • Kleenex mini pocket tissues: the runny nose unwavering companion.

Not on picture: Samsung Galaxy S20 with a Spigen Tough Armor case.
