Afaik there is a specific spot between the shoulders with brown fat that acts as a temperature regulator. As a caveat, i read this in a (scientific) article decades ago.

Just be consistent and never give them table scraps. The worst one can do is putting it on an intermittent schedule, meaning; sometimes someone gives them something, other times not. That will make them beg very insistently. If they learn that they will never get human food at dinnertime, then they will probably not beg, or not very much. You can also make sure to feed them their own food around your dinnertime, so that they are satiated and content.
