Hey everyone! 👋

We’ve been hard at work behind the scenes, and with spring in full swing, we wanted to share a few recent Proton VPN updates that we think you’ll appreciate. These aren’t flashy new features — just thoughtful improvements to make your online life smoother, safer, and more efficient.

🛡️ NetShield is now even better at blocking phishing sites

Worried about accidentally clicking a sketchy link? We’ve expanded the list of known phishing domains NetShield blocks — so now it stops more bad stuff before it even has a chance to load. Just turn on NetShield in the app, and you’re good to go.

🔋 Battery life improvements for mobile users

We’ve improved how Proton VPN runs in the background on both Android and iOS. If you're on the move using a cellular connection, the app will now let your phone rest more when idle, meaning less power drain and longer battery life.

Some quick tips for even better battery life:

  • Use WiFi when you can (uses less power than mobile data)

  • Switch to WireGuard (lightweight and battery-friendly)

  • Don’t stress about using lots of data — that barely affects battery usage

Faster browsing when conditions aren’t perfect

Proton VPN has always been fast, but now it’s smarter too. If your connection is being slowed down due to certain network quirks, the app can detect and automatically fix it in real-time so you get the fastest connection speed available. No manual tweaking needed.

We know “invisible” updates aren’t as exciting as shiny new features, but these kinds of tweaks make a huge difference day-to-day — and they’re all part of our mission to keep improving the VPN experience.

Let us know how these updates are working for you, or if you’ve noticed a difference!

I just now realized I have access to Proton Docs. I've been a Proton user for years at this point and it does keep getting better and better, though I do have some gripes about some of their stances.

I've paid for StandardNotes for a while now. Anyone know how Proton Docs are and if you could replace StandardNotes?

Anyone know if there's an Import / Export between?

Anyone know if there's a Proton Docs Android App or if it's coming?

anyone else having trouble with the newish vpn app? I seem to loose connection a lot more. almost never did before. hate the new interface too.

Hej! I need to import my Proton Calendar to Google Calendar so that an appointment scheduling app can see conflicts.

Syncing with Google Calendar was easy, but for some reason multi-day events don't show up on Google (and so in the scheduling app).

Is that a known bug? Any ideas how to handle this?

For example cryptocurrency wallet seed phrase. One can add it to the notes field (password field is occupied by my wallet password).

I can also add new field of type "hidden" to the login entry, where i need to click eye icon in order to reveal the content.

Beside login items, there are also Notes items, which does not seems to feature hidden field.

I assume that in terms of security all field types (password, note) and all entries (login, note) are equally secured.

But the field which is not password or a hidden note of the login item, are more vulnerable due to someone look behind your back or due to a computer client-side scanning (spyware third party or built in OS made to screenshot ones screen)?

What is your suggestion on storage of a super-sensitive data like crypto. wallet seeds?

From the team:

Hey everyone,

As our progress towards the roadmap we recently reminded you of continues, we’re glad to announce that Proton Pass item file attachments are now possible across all item types.

Important information, such as backup codes for your logins, can now easily be stored in any format, such as PDF, JPEG, PNG, or even a .txt file! There is also the option to upload multiple files to one item.

As you may know, cloud storage space has become somewhat of a commodity in our digital era, meaning we can only offer this functionality to our paying users.

Here are the paid plans that will get access to this feature starting today:

  • Pass Plus
  • Pass Family
  • Proton Pass Professional
  • Proton Unlimited
  • Proton Visionary
  • Proton Family
  • Proton Duo

You can upload any file up to 100MB per file, with a total of 10-500GB in storage space for attachments, depending on your plan.

We hope the addition of this new feature will greatly improve your experience with Proton Pass, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts on it!

If you have any questions, such as what the storage limit is, you can learn more here: https://proton.me/support/pass-file-attachments

Feel free to let us know your thoughts and questions below!

Stay safe,

Hello, I have photos on Proton Drive that I want to move to Proton photos. What can I do?

I'm just mostly commenting to vent frustration with what I'm seeing this past week as a sharp spike in captchas and sites straight up blocking Proton VPN IPs. Proton is slowed down, captcha'd and blocked at a far higher rate than any such behavior I encountered with Nord when I used them. You can do all you want to protect privacy but when you hold yourself out as the big "privacy" VPN service everyone's gonna be suspicious that you're gonna be the service that bad actors use and block all your traffic. I know I should also figure this will happen but I would also figure there would be more effort to prevent it from happening. I use Proton VPN because I enjoy Proton's other services but if this keeps up I feel it may get to be unusable for me.

This used to work but this weekend I noticed it was no longer working.

I subscribe to a streaming service outside my country, it's in south america. I used to turn on the VPN on my desktop (EndeavourOS), connect to a country in south america, do the same on the TV and I'd Chromecast the video. No problems, excelent quality, worked great.

This no longer works. When the TV is connected to ProtonVPN, it doesn't show in chromecast devices list. As soon as I disconnect it, it shows up.

Things I tried:

  • Updating the ProtonVPN app on both TV and desktop
  • Updating the TV firmware
  • Changed from Wireguard to OpenVPN
  • Enabled split tunneling on the TV and whitelisted chromecast
  • Connecting to the exact same server
  • Several countries
  • My android phone can find the TV but nothing happens when I select it
  • Toggled settings such as Moderate NAT, IPV6 and Port forwarding, nothing works.

Chromecasting works fine if I disconnect the VPN on the TV but I can't watch the streaming service. Any ideas? Thanks.

No rage, just confusion as I'm sure it's something I did wrong.

I try out Proton Pass (web browser) for the first time and generate an alias, and then a password. And I remember adding a couple of notes to it. But I opened it up the next day, and the alias is still there, but the other info is gone. Nothing in the history, nor in the generated passwords.Looks like it was last modified at its creation, so I would guess that it never saved the info.

Did I miss a button click or am I missing something?

I'm using Pop!_OS 20.04. Until now I've been using wireguard conf files that I set up manually with nmcli and that works fine, but I though I'd give the linux app a try, mainly to be able to quickly switch servers without needing to download a new conf file each time.

My issue is I have to set the wireguard connection MTU to 1400 on my network. With the default value of 1420, connections are always timing out and I can't get any site loaded on Firefox. Now, I can run ip link set from terminal and change it after the app creates the proton0 interface, and that's a workaround, but is there some way to change the MTU parameter for all connections?

Title. Is that possible? I have proton vpn setup at the network layer at home so there is no need for the app on my phone or laptop to be connected when at home. However I would like it to auto connect when I connect outside of my house. As anyone done this before? This would specifically be for android and windows devices if that matters.

It now shows events for upcoming days, not just the current day.

I am not the author.

I found this blog to have both a short summary of the reasons as well as a pretty complete overview of the options for protecting against this specific threat model. I can just send this to people and they'll understand the why and the how.

I've decided to leave Proton after being a user since 2017. Today, I migrated all my services to my new domain, marking the end of my time with Proton. The recent political noise and price point were no longer justifiable for me. It was a good experience while it lasted. Thanks for the fishes 🐟 🐠

We're consolidating our social media presence due to limited resources and no longer posting on Mastodon. Follow us on Reddit

Please tell us that you're not moving away from Lemmy/Mbin too. There's a gigantic tonedeafness to asking your supporters to use centralized social media at this specific time that's hard to accept you're not realizing.

(quote from Proton's mastodon.social account info - there wasn't even a post made about it)

Currently moving my partner and I from Google to the Proton Duo plan.

Mail import and forwarding is great, the calendar is decent (we only miss the month overview widget on Android), the missing Linux Drive client is a pain (I tried to mount a subfolder with rclone and am now getting 429-ed (rate limited).

Some unsolved usecases we have are on mobile:

  • We use Google Keeps to share lists and take notes, and would like a mobile, non-Google, syncing notes app with a widget.Rsync is OK, we don't need it to constantly synchronize, daily is enough.

  • We use Google Sheets on mobile to track things like board games and cat weight. Any ideas for a syncing mobile-friendly sheets app?

I've tried Standard Notes but it doesn't seem to have an Android widget.

Cryptpad UI is too cluttered on mobile.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Thank you for all the quality replies!! So far I've found Collabora Office to have an amazing Mobile UI. Unfortunately I can't edit files in Proton Drive in another app on Android, and manually downloading and uploading sucks. So I'll need to figure something out for sync.

In terms of notes: Standard Notes, Joplin and the Obsidian apps I found have no included widget. NotallyX does, and the styling feels a lot like Keep. There is a separate ObsidianToDoWidget app but it hasn't seen any update in 2 years. Dark Note looks nice but looks like it isn't open source.

So for now I'll go with NotallyX for the note widget.

Both Collabora Office and NotallyX will need an external app for sync so I'll check SyncThing For Android now.

A complaint I've had for a while is that the Proton Mail bridge auto starts with the ProtonMail Bridge configuration window open. If you're like me, everytime you restart your computer, Proton Mail Bridge jumps up in your face and you immediately close it.

TIL (today I learned), there's a flag you can pass on the command line "--no-window" that starts the app without opening a window.

If you edit your system startup entry (this varies by operating system) and add this flag to its command line arguments, Proton Mail Bridge will still start, however, it will start to the tray and no window will appear.

As an example on KDE Linux:

  1. Search for "Autostart"
  2. Press the "See Properties" button on the Proton Mail Bridge Autostart entry
  3. Go to the "Application" tab
  4. Add "--no-window" to the "Arguments" text box (it should be an empty text box, if it's not make sure there's a space between any existing arguments, e.g., "--foo" -> "--foo --no-window" not "--foo" -> "--foo--no-window")
  5. Press "OK" and the next time you reboot your computer, Proton Mail should auto start in the background to the tray.

I've seen this posted a couple of times in comments, it seems like a reasonable investigation in to the recent shit storm

I usually actively avoid engaging in anything to do with US politics as it's pointless getting depressed by an awful situation I have zero control over; this post is not about fueling arguments or making us all feel worse, just determining if a useful tech company has gone to shit (TL;DR: probably not).
