I know Louis is/was on Odyssey. Anyone know if he's on Peertube or has had any thoughts about Peertube?

[–] ozoned@piefed.social 2 points 3 days ago

Thank you so much! It's nice to know others agree. I've been so concerned with all of this, thinking I'm the only one thinking this, but I'm not. We're ALL thinking this. And I've been having an absolute BLAST. Not just for myself, but doing my Fireside Fedi show and even working towards setting up my nonprofit BT Free. We'll see where it all goes. Maybe it just us, but at least we have each other. :-) Thank you for the kind words of support. <3

I'm more just trying to get a very quick site set up. I made a super basic page ATM. I'll revisit it later to try to make something much nicer or hire someone. Multiple folks have mentioned drupal so I'll have to give it more of a look. Thank you for the feedback. :-)

AH! "You need to wait 24 hours after a peertube restart to see a peertube auto follow." And I just restarted it yesterday thinking a restart would force an auto follow job. :-D

Thank you SO MUCH! :-) I'll update later today then! EXCITING! :-D

Thank you for the info. I've unfollowed everyone and set my instance to pull from ptindex.btfree.org and it's not autofollowing yet. So either I messed something up or it's on a timer. I have a question into the Matrix channel. Gonna let it go a few days, then next week I'll dig into it more and open a git question about it. I'll definitely update here what I find out! Thank you!

And great idea about cross posting. I always forget about that, not used to this style. :-)

That's AMAZING! Thank you so much sir! :-)

This sounds very interesting. What is the purpose of the hash?

Dansup talked about actually doing a centralized CDN to reduce storage, storage an image in one place so any instance can use it instead of everyone hosting their own. You could still host your own as well though.

This seems seems not that. This is just the hash right, so not certain what hashes do in the Fedi.

Thank you though!

Every little bit counts.

Good day all! I'm starting up a Peertube instance that'll be moderated for folks, hopefully backed by donations through my nonprofit org BT Free. I'm going to work on setting up Peertube next week. But I was thinking of setting up a moderated index.

Looking at the following link, in the "PeerTube auto follow & Global Search" section: https://framagit.org/framasoft/peertube/instances-peertube

It seems I can just create a file, put that code in there, set the hosts I want, and then any Peertube can go to Admin - Settings - Configuration - Basic - Search Index URL - and then put in https://ptindex.btfee.org/ . Is this correct?

If so, does anyone know if Peertube can refresh it's host list or if it refreshes on a timer or something?

I'll update if I find out the answer as well.

EDIT: Ok so already realized there's a "Search Index URL" under the "Enable global search" for managing what servers you users can search on. Then there's also a "Index URL" under the "Automatically follow instances of a public index" which you can follow. Awesome. I have it there, but not updated ... yet?

EDIT: Still having no luck. Filed BZ: https://github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube/issues/7037

Then I realized, while finally finding the appropriate logs in /var/www/peertube/storage/logs that Peertube is throwing a JSON error:

peertube4.log:{"level":"error","message":"Cannot auto follow hosts of index https://ptindex.btfree.org/.","label":"video.firesidefedi.live:443","err":{"stack":"RequestError: Expected ',' or '}' after property value in JSON at position 179 (line 15 column 1) in "https://ptindex.btfree.org/?count=1000%5C"\n at parseBody (file:///var/www/peertube/versions/peertube-v7.1.1/node_modules/got/dist/source/core/response.js:35:15)\n at Request. This seems to be due to https://framagit.org/framasoft/peertube/instances-peertube having a typo:

{
"total": 5,
"data": [
{
"host": "video1.example.com"
},
{
"host": "video2.example.com"
},
{
"host": "video3.example.com"
},
{
"host": "video4.example.com"
},
{
"host": "video5.example.com"
}
]

Should be:

{
"total": 5,
"data": [
{
"host": "video1.example.com"
},
{
"host": "video2.example.com"
},
{
"host": "video3.example.com"
},
{
"host": "video4.example.com"
},
{
"host": "video5.example.com"
}
]
}

Yup, I know. But TILVids for instance was doing that and Youtube blocked them. So now they can't. Google is going to attempt to keep what they consider to be "their" data in their data center and keep us out. That's why we need a way for Youtubers to upload to Youtube AND other platforms at the same time.

Awesome! Thank you!

Sounds like a great idea

Silly question, I've heard of flair from the other place, but honestly never used it. Is their a flair explainer somewhere? Is it for posts only? Or do users get it to?

When I go to the Bookmarks page - Account - Bookmarks - I see the comments I've bookmarked, but they don't show I've already upvoted them. If I upvote it removes it, then I upvote again it shows green and my upvote.

I was looking at Christine Lemmer-Webber's Wikipedia page and had a thought that it should show her Fediverse handle.

I know nothing about Wikipedia, I know community can edit it.

Anyone have any thoughts about looking upbyour favorite Fediverse stars and adding their Fediverse handle to Wikipedia?

I know George Tekai is active on Wikipedia, seems like an easy onboarding to Fediverse. Here's all the wiki info about George oh and HERE is where he's active on the Fediverse.

I think we need to start slipping these kinds of things everywhere so it starts people clicking. Will it be huge, probably not, but each little click can turn into a tsunami eventually.

I JUST realized this today. I've started creating posts on Piefed.social and when taken to a Create Post page I'm typing in the upper right it says "Create Post" while "Submit" causes me to scroll down. more than once when I meant to SUBMIT I hit "Create Post" as I'm creating a post right?

That "Create Post" should disappear or move or something when creating a post and "Submit" should be more accessible. H

I'll upload an image to show what I'm seeing, as the Create Post button is clearly visible and Submit isn't.

Peertube is great. I LOVE it. It's EMPOWERING. But let's face it, onboarding sucks. It requires you to LEAVE everything from Youtube and come to manually upload it all to Peertube. There IS the addon for hooking into Youtube and pulling into Peertube, but as TILVids points out, Google will block out.

Are there any tools, or is anyone willing to make anything, that is a Youtube Uploader AND peertube uploader? If we can them a Youtube Uploader tool that's BETTER than their shit website we can squeeze our foot in the door, we lower the barrier to entry to allow them to onboard to the Fediverse.

I'm currently working on setting up a nonprofit organization for fostering the fediverse. I'll run a peertube, and yes cost will be an issue but let me worry about that, but I'm concerned with what TILVids is hitting with basically Google puts up a wall and we don't have a good way to onboard folks.

So we need tools to meet folks where they're at, which would be helping them upload to Youtube and onboard to us. Or have a tool that can export all of their videos and descriptions and what not and upload to a configured Peertube with a click of a button.

Any thoughts, suggestions, etc?

I'm starting a NonProfit Fediverse powered business called BT Free. I was thinking of making my homepage built on Ghost, but due to some of it's choices, I'm looking for something else.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a self hosted, possibly fediverse powered, software for creating a simple clean efficient business website landing page that explains who we are, what we're doing, etc. I am NOT a designer so something with templates or can hold my hand would be wildly helpful.

I was thinking maybe a static site generator maybe?

Anyone have ANY thoughts or suggestions? Remember there are no such things as bad ideas or comments!

I'm using Piefed.social, obviously, and I'm getting a LOT of notifications. When I click on the bell I have a massive amount of notifications. Is there a way to mass delete notifications or do I have to do it one by one? Any plans for a mass delete of notifications?

I was discussing this on another post and when we're doing internet searches for any kind of information I feel we should be discussing that on the Fediverse or bringing back the info to the Fediverse.

But some folks brought up some excellent points that Kagi has a Fediverse bang.

I run SearxNG and asked in their Matrix channel: https://matrix.to/#/#searxng:matrix.org

possiblemeatball pointed out that SearxNG also has a Fediverse !bang . If you go to Preferences - Engines - Social media there are bangs for lemmy comments, lemmy communites, mastodon hashtags, etc. We need to be leveraging this!

What other search engines foster the Fediverse?

I was just pointed to https://fedi-search.com/ which seems awesome, but I haven't leveraged YET!

I just now realized I have access to Proton Docs. I've been a Proton user for years at this point and it does keep getting better and better, though I do have some gripes about some of their stances.

I've paid for StandardNotes for a while now. Anyone know how Proton Docs are and if you could replace StandardNotes?

Anyone know if there's an Import / Export between?

Anyone know if there's a Proton Docs Android App or if it's coming?

I was just thinking about this, when I'm facing an issue, the first thing I do is go to a search engine and usually there's a Reddit post. But I don't want to ask there. And the only way we're going to build up the info for folks to find us and come here is for us to just start asking here. On the Fediverse. We need to build up that mountain of knowledge that Reddit has and will always have. So we should be championing ANYONE asking questions here. Even if we think it's obvious and we think you can just Google it. There was a time where you literally couldn't just Google it. That was built over time. We need to build that here. So start asking your questions here! Find the answers and then post your answer to your own question. Or let someone do it for you. We need to build the knowledge here to be found. It's not just about people looking for alternatives. We need our knowledge to be more valuable than their knowledge.

LinkStack looks like it hasn't been updated in 2+ years. Any self hosted alternatives anyone recommends?

Maybe even a static site generator?
