Human ingenuity is a hell of a thing, but it isn't impossible for us too. I don't feet it ir reasonable to put human extinction on the table now, but if we burn all known fossil fuel reserves it is, maybe if we continue on our current trajectory into 2100 it will be.

You're not raising 'the workforce', you're raising a human being that will produce a vast amount of co2 future humans, even us in coming decades, can't afford to have in the atmosphere. So if raising this child is such a selfless burden the solution is simple: don't do it.

Most jobs exist because the people exist to do them. We saw what was essential to support a global population of 8 billion odd with covid (ie not all that much really).

AI - vast energy drain itself that in co2 terms shouldn't exist - is coming for white collar bullshit jobs. We very well might be entering a period where the people exist but the jobs don't. We don't need more people from wealthy nations, consuming wealthy nationers' resources. There are more than enough workers to provide for everybody, the excess are primarily consumers.

So, given that it is such a burden, just don't bother.

Earth system scientists put the kind of society complex enough for hospitals and higher education require an energy returned on energy invested in the teens. 'Renewables' (let's call them low carbon, there isn't anything very renewable about the blade of a wind turbine) barely touch that and often don't get near.

• The picture is so varied that one can find statistics to counter this 'barely touches the teens' claim. Look at the totality of the picture and draw your own conclusions. I am just presenting some reasoning to justify a claim that we are heading towards a much lower energy future, maybe next century or something (which doesn't have to be bad, provided everybody isn't slaving for a class of energy-obese billionaires protected by a fascist police state).

• I looked into this a lot about 15 years ago, when it seemed that we were still in the last chance saloon on avoiding catastrophic climate change. The science might have moved on. I don't have current sources anybody interested in the concept of eroei and the complexity it creates will have to look themselves.
