Amazon had brand new 2nd gens for $79 about a week and a half ago. I haven’t checked lately cause Apple replaced my gen 1 after the 17.0 update killed it. If they didn’t replace it that’s what I would have gone with.

I have 2 1st gens and they work perfectly fine for me. I don’t like FaceTime so that wouldn’t matter to me. If that is a must have then go for it.

You might consider calling them and explain what happened and tell them your worried about a future update bricking the device. The worst they can say is no.

I called customer service and it's a known issue. In fact if you have one that has a flashing led when it's plugged in even if it's not from the update they would probably swap it if you told them that was the problem. Not sure what model they are going to replace it with but it's better than buying a new one.
