I called customer service and it's a known issue. In fact if you have one that has a flashing led when it's plugged in even if it's not from the update they would probably swap it if you told them that was the problem. Not sure what model they are going to replace it with but it's better than buying a new one.

No shit, I haven't upgraded to 17.1 yet, fingers crossed it breaks.

Holy shit this is actually a known thing?

Mine died like 3 days after the 17.0 update. It was the oldest Apple TV I had in the house so I figured it just finally took a shit. I went out and bought a 3rd gen to replace it.

I will be calling support after work today to see if they can replace it for me.

Mine was bricked for a day or so and then I tried to plug in it back again and miraculously turned on and it has been working fine ever since. Weird.

You might consider calling them and explain what happened and tell them your worried about a future update bricking the device. The worst they can say is no.

How do I know what version I have? All I know it's a 4K haha, but not sure if it's 1st Gen or 2nd.

Mine bricked with the beta, but I managed to enter recovery mode and with a logitech harmony remote navigate the menu to recover it.

tvOS 17 bricked mine, took it to Apple, another gen 1 4K was here in a few days.

Absent it being a widespread issue it’s doubtful. Even if it is, it’ll be another bend gate standoff. So maybe in about 3-5 years and a legal proceeding?

Well dang. Mine survived.

Started a twitter thread if anyone wants to post their experience on there. Maybe that’ll get Apple’s attention

Same thing happened to me. I have a Gen 2 that is less than two years old and it’s completely bricked now. Took it to an Apple store and they said I have to either pay for a replacement or buy a new one. I’ll be doing none of those things since this is 100% their fault

ATV4K Gen 1 - Yesterday lunchtime all good, last night went to watch something, no response form the remote, well it turned on, but then nothing. Tried controlling from my phone, worked, but very sluggish, and couldn't 'select' anything. Google'd it, pressed the key combination to reset the remote, it restarted the ATV (?). Same. Pressed the combination to restart the ATV, it restarted, but to an image of the Bluetooth symbol and iPhone. Got a notification on my iPhone about an ATV in recovery and generating a code, entered the code into the ATV, it started loading, then back to the Bluetooth/phone image. Same thing again. Unplugged it, from then on, when connected all i get was white flashing lights (like 12 flashes, then a double-flash). Made a Genius bar appt, took it in this morning. Guy takes it out the back, comes back after 10 mins and says "yeah, cant even get it into the recovery mode, so nothing we can do to fix it". I was just about to shove Reddit at him and argue, when he followed up with "so i will order you a new one, and we will cover it, as there is no port so neither you or we can restore it." Apparently it will be here in a few days, week tops. They are great at my local store. (Basingstoke, UK)
