I called customer service and it's a known issue. In fact if you have one that has a flashing led when it's plugged in even if it's not from the update they would probably swap it if you told them that was the problem. Not sure what model they are going to replace it with but it's better than buying a new one.

Mine was bricked for a day or so and then I tried to plug in it back again and miraculously turned on and it has been working fine ever since. Weird.

You might consider calling them and explain what happened and tell them your worried about a future update bricking the device. The worst they can say is no.
