I believe you would be correct if the roles were reversed. For our sake we should be thankful they are not.

I don't want to be overly optimistic, but if we can find a way to heal our country and make a positive change in our politics, I'm all for it.

The difference here is that the Liberals are not the Democrats. They will stand up and push back. If Poilievre makes it about needless opposition, they will just work with the other parties and keep going. They don't need him.

But yes, I can appreciate what you say. It seems clear that the Republicans and those like them have only ever paid lip service to good faith and respectful dialogue, and they've never done anything but take advantage of anyone who offers them goodwill. I can see this starting in western Canada, and I do believe Poilievre is cut from the same cloth. But I think Carney has a strategic advantage here and it doesn't disadvantage him to at least try to create a better environment. Hard liners won't change, but Canada seems to have softer support in the centre and they generally prefer civil politics.

If the Liberals take electoral reform it will be yet another massive Conservative fumble.

It would be by far the funniest funniest thing.

Yeah that's fair. He's not above politicking, in fact I'm sure his decisions weigh many factors, politics being one of them.

On the topic, I hope that the left doesn't build a personality cult around him. He's not particularly charismatic, he's just a technocrat with skills that can help us. Let the man do his job without deifying him. We don't need more populism right now, we need experts... and we sure don't need celebrity politicians.

I'm not religious, but I feel like this is somehow extra super duper disrespectful. Religious folk are not known for their tolerance of false or satirical iconography.

But I guess he's insulting Catholics so it's probably totally cool with his evangelical base. Oh who am I kidding, he could make AI scat porn with their Lord and Saviour and they'd find a passage in the Bible that supports it.

I'd flatten my nuts with a mallet before I go on truth social, but if you google it you can find other sources talking about it. Such as New York Post, who I assume is proud of his announcement: https://nypost.com/2025/05/02/us-news/trump-declares-may-8-victory-day-for-world-war-ii/

As usual with Trump, when you look into it you realize it's worse than you originally thought:

Trump acknowledged in a Truth Social that “many of our allies and friends” already celebrate on May 8, but said America should join in because “we did more than any other Country, by far, in producing a victorious result.

Man, fuck this guy.

Yes, to all strategic resources - hydro, oil water, telecom, probably even critical minerals.

Manufacturing perceived disagreement is politics 101. However, in this case there's no reason to believe that Carney isn't being sincere. I haven't met anyone that doesn't believe Trudeau fucked that up. Even if he knew it was domed to failure he should have gone ahead. Unless you're predisposed to dislike Carney, there's no reason to assume he isn't holding the same opinion on this as everyone else. Do you know something we don't?

[–] RaskolnikovsAxe@lemmy.ca 18 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

I think this is nearly impossible. I believe it's the most conservative-safe riding in the country.

[–] RaskolnikovsAxe@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm referring to the fact that he could have made Poilievre wait until November (I think he has up to 6 months). He did not have to do it immediately, it was Carney's decision to make.

This is not entirely unlikely. And I would not prima facie be against this approach.

Except for the fact that the common people don't get nuance like this, and it just makes the division infinitely worse. The rest of Canada is going to consider Alberta to be traitors, and the part of Alberta that are traitors are going to get fired up with false hope, further stoking their hatred when they are inevitably let down.

Maybe this is the only way to get east west pipelines. Maybe there are pieces in place behind the scenes. Unfortunately I think it's unlikely to be this sophisticated, because Smith doesn't come across to me as a sophisticated thinker. I'm inclined to think the simpler explanation is that Smith is self serving and we really have rural Albertans who have grown up knowing nothing but hatred for eastern liberals, and they've been sold a bill of goods that they don't question and wouldn't understand if they did.

Firstly it gives Poilievre an honest opportunity to contribute. People want to see everyone working together, so by letting Poilievre in right away he's giving him a chance to temper the rhetoric and get work done. And if he doesn't temper the rhetoric, it's likely to work in Carney's favour. If he's seen as obstructing, it will not look good for him. It seems like a win-win-win... It looks like fair dealing, if Poilievre comes to the table honestly it works for Carney, if he doesn't it works for Carney as well. It's good politics that is both strategic in the way it encourages good cooperation and has good optics around fairness.

Secondly, the elephant in the room is the separation nonsense. Poilievre is running for a seat in the heart of separatist country, and with the separation rhetoric ramping up, better to have Poilievre - who is ideologically tied to Smith and will be representing Alberta - in the public eye as soon as possible, so he can wear this garbage. After all, Smith seems to be adept at causing no end of hassle for Poilievre. Best to put him front and centre as soon as possible so he is forced to respond to it.

This is just one of thousands of examples of immense disrespect. And his cult follows him along through everything.

I'm all seriousness, if you find this appealing, would you not be happier if you just move there? If you have no allegiance to this country, please be respectful, have some dignity, and don't actively try to ruin it for the rest of us. Stop trying to sabotage this country by actively undermining it.

Big tough oil men turn into limpwristed traitors who knuckle under when Trump calls to them. Fucking embarrassing.

Nationalize the oil already. Get the foreign corporations and their brain dead lackeys out.

Canada desperately needs a national strategic internet constellation.

Edit to fix link.

According to Reuters, Trump is preparing to remove legal status for 240000 Ukrainian immigrants, following which they will likely be deported back to a war zone.

The US continues her slide into global irrelevance, abandoning respect for democracy, the rule of law, and human rights.

It is the duty of the countries that continue to respect democracy and human rights, including Canada, to prevent these people from being forced back into a war torn country.

Edit Still getting the hang of this, created this post without the link to Reuters. Apologies, link added.

This is one sample visit to the conservative subreddit. It's an appalling example of the impact of disinformation. When you need to be reminded of who the enemy is and what they think, visit here. You will see that there is no gratitude or mutual respect, and there never was. There was never any concept of mutual benefit. And now, with Trump leading the cult, there truly is no depth to which they won't go, and no decisions from Trump that won't be retroactively justified.

These people are dangerous, and they don't give a shit about any alliances, friendship or partnership. And they control the levers of power.

Edit to add a screenshot. Not sure how to add more, but it doesn't get any better as you go deeper. What's clear is that this relationship is over, and we need to move on.

At the first Trump cabinet meeting, he stated his intentions clearly. He restated blatant lies and disinformation, and he won't really be questioned on it from the press or from any US politicians. The US is the enemy of Canada and should be understood as such. Take heed of his treatment of Ukraine - when he noted that they would lose the war without US help - and consider what he will propose when he uses the same argument on us. He makes it very clear in the video.

And very carefully consider which of our political leaders will stand up to Trump when he makes the argument that we need American military in our country to protect us.

Edit : Fixed the numbers (showing all voters, with Carney as Liberal leader)

Has anyone told him that tariffs require willing trade partners?

Being charitable... I'm not sure this is the best messaging he can go with. He doesn't seem to realize it's over. Most of us are finished with the US and we can't trust them at this point. He needs to start standing up for Canada and presenting a message of strength, independence and unity... Not continuing to offer platitudes and extending olive branches. Frankly, it looks weak, and it doesn't instill any trust that he will do what's necessary when the time comes.

He finishes off with a show of strength that hits all the right notes, but when it comes after the weaselly opening it just seems like too little, too late.
