Thank you! I'm saving this for later.

In North America it's possible to mistake the poisonous eastern jack-o'lantern mushroom for chanterelles because their gills are small. Fresh eastern jack-o'lantern gills glow green in the dark though, so as long as you know that fact it's pretty easy to tell them apart.

I remember when I had been fooled into believing it was.

That looks amazing. Are those spindly white mushrooms enoki or something you foraged?

I've had an abundance of chanterelles recently and decided to share what I've been doing with them.

Chanterelles in saucepan

Cooking chanterelles is easy, I start by tearing them into evenly sized strips (they're stringy like chicken) and throwing them in a saucepan by themselves to boil off all the water. (Adding a bit of water at the start to cover the bottom of the pan lets you start it on high heat without burning them)

While the water boils off I start making Mexican yellow rice to serve on the side. I don't have fancy ingredients like saffron but turmeric, cumin, garlic, oregano, and a chicken stock cube gets the job done for me.

When the chanterelles are ready I add a bit of oil with onions and poblano peppers cut into strips, and season with cayenne pepper, cumin, garlic, and paprika (salt and pepper to taste). Cook that on high heat and stir until the texture of the veggies is just right. I stop stirring and let it burn a little while melting some cheese on top at the end.

And here is the result:

Chanterelle Fajitas

You can get some tortillas or just eat it as-is, it's delicious either way. Goes well with salsa or hot sauce. I've made this probably 5 or 6 times in the past month because I keep finding more chanterelles and I will never get bored of it.

Still would love to hear some more ideas on how to cook chanterelles, because I will probably find even more soon lol.

Mix them in. We need to get out of the mindset that animation is not deserving of the same respect as live action.

They're not the same, but it's easy to see how people become too jaded and cynical to vote.

Here's an article from the corporate media about the DNC's response to Mamdani's victory, and Here's an article from independent leftist media about the Islamophobic attacks against him.

I won't include an article from right-wing media, but I'm sure you can guess how they're coping with the electoral victory of a Muslim socialist immigrant born in Uganda to Indian parents (not well).

The post we're commenting under has also included some articles.

Even if it were the case that they didn't want to be there, "just following orders" is not an acceptable excuse for committing a genocide. The morally correct thing to do if you're compelled to service in the IDF is to refuse and face the consequences, because they cannot be worse than the moral injury of being tasked with the murder of innocent children.

Capitalism describes a system of exploitation by which a privileged few profit from the labor of others. Regulated capitalism (also known as welfare capitalism) has only ever come about as a result of popular labor and social movements (which tended to be explicitly socialist) fighting for labor rights and threatening revolution, causing the owning class to allow reforms and expansion of welfare as a form of appeasement. This happened in the US mid-20th century and it succeeded in taking the wind out of the sails of the movement, and since then the owning class has steadily eroded the welfare state through austerity.

Capitalism should not be preserved because it creates inequality by design; that is its purpose. You can claim that is a childish perspective, but here are some of the people you're calling childish:

  • Albert Einstein
  • Helen Keller
  • Martin Luther King Jr
  • Malcolm X
  • Bertrand Russell
  • George Orwell
  • Oscar Wilde
  • Pablo Picasso

You have a limited perspective right now because you've been conditioned to dismiss alternatives with little thought. So was I, but I've since learned the history of capitalism and how it functions, as well as the various movements against it and what they've accomplished.

They're all maintaining decorum (something they would die before dropping) by congratulating him on his win while denouncing his policies and stopping short of endorsing him. Ever since his victory all the "liberal" corporate media has been praising the "energy" of his campaign while criticizing his policies as dangerous and painting his pro-palestinian views as anti-semitic. Don't even try to pretend the way the DNC has been responding to this is normal. In nearly every other democratic primary the DNC have been quick to line up behind the victor.

Yes, of course. That must be why they tried ferociously to stop him from winning the primary with Islamophobic smears and are now freaking out that they failed, and why the corporate media (yes, even the "liberal" media) are all crashing out.

If NYC uses ranked choice voting in the general as well and Cuomo learns from his disaster of a campaign then he might try coalition-building with Eric Adams or others to pull off a win by getting neoliberals and MAGA to gang up on Zohran. It's a headscratcher for me because I never expect neoliberals to learn from their mistakes, and yet they might actually feel forced to because they never fail to pull out all the stops against progressives, let alone an actual socialist.

Pantheon season 1 has been added to Netflix today, but season 2 has not (and might never be). Both seasons are on Prime Video but it is region-locked, though I'm not sure which regions it is available in.

Pantheon is a fantastic sci-fi show with really smart themes that has been completely screwed over by streaming services. The writing is incredible and contains some very intelligent satire and critiques of big tech corporations, and even dips its toes into geopolitics (not even kidding, the Israel-Palestine conflict becomes a plot point in season 2, and this was written prior to Oct. 7).

If you want to watch the series in its entirety then piracy is a must for the vast majority. Needless to say, I highly recommend watching.

I'm looking for software for making small-scale maps / designs. Say for example I wanted to map out a small-ish plot of land with various markers indicating features of the site. Another requirement is that is must have the capability to depict elevation. Others have recommended map-making software for dungeons and dragons, but of the ones I can find they are either paid / subscription models or they strictly adhere to a grid system that makes it impossible to use for my purposes.

Does anyone have some good recommendations?

Edit: It doesn't have to be a single piece of software necessarily. If anyone has recommendations for a particular workflow (like for example if you know some good open source drawing software I could use to draw over the top of a topographic map) I'm interested in that as well.

More pictures available if needed. I broke a few open that were in rougher shape and they are solid white and spongy all the way through. Found in open woods in West Kentucky.

Thinking about frying these up and seeing how they taste but want a bit more assurance that I'm not taking a huge risk doing so. I couldn't find these in my National Audubon Society Field Guide so I'm a bit reluctant to take the chance.
