I'm allowed to read my book in the bathtub or in the seat of a plane. I'm not entitled to scan it and upload the result of this action in any form without involving the author.

^ this is common sense and gaming companies currently have so little, it's pathetic. they'd rather see people litter the planet with 4 different PCBs and plastic of the current gen consoles than arrive at common sense.

true but not quite relevant, most people who read books are also losers. free-time activities are really everyone's own prerogative

I'm just so sad that it seems most execs in the field go play tennis or golf after work and think videogames are for losers. there is a lot of contempt and expectation that losers will just forever dish out money. if it wasn't for this strange phenomenon that game engines are so available nowadays, we would be screwed. thank god for the indie space

  • borderless window mode it is. you might be wanting to run exclusive fullscreen but that's only an advantage on windows and their terrible compositor
  • i'm just on pipewire natively and things are ok. i only noticed that sound can get flaky when you're coasting too close to 100% cpu
  • yeah gamescope might not work, though it doesn't really give cs2 any advantage - fsr is already in the game. if you're trying to do stretched 4:3 maybe use your screen's upscaler?
  • for me there was something similar on nvidia, had to toggle vsync and/or msaa on/off, not sure which combination did it. on amd it's fine. maybe one of those things where you either wait for nvidia to not prioritize big ai, or you give the new NVK driver a try.

it's a good os. on the other hand everytime i learned anything in windows it would get invalidated by new ux and new bugs...

Hey y'all, I bought a x4x4x4x4 4 slots M.2 PCIe card foolishly thinking that if it fits in the slot, it would surely work. In the end, I got 2 of the 4 SSDs working on my old AM4 X470 chipset. I'm coming to you for advice what the cheapest way to get to use this would be. I've noticed that a lot of CPUs have a PCIe lane limitation of 28, just short of what I need (I'd like to run the SSDs but also a x16 GPU). I'm not too keen to buy a threadripper setup for this occasion...

Cheers!

HDR Confusion (lemy.lol)
submitted 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) by SitD@lemy.lol to c/linux_gaming@lemmy.world

Hey fellas, could you help me understand a bit more about HDR?

  • I understand that it's an absolute brightness standard, not like the relative levels in SDR
  • But why does it end up washing out colors unless I amplify them in kwin? Is just the brightness absolute in nits, but not the color?
  • Why does my screen block the brightness control in HDR mode but not contrast? And why does the contrast increase the brightness of highlights, instead of just split midtones towards brighter and darker shades?
  • Why is truehdr400 supposed to be better in dark rooms than peak1000 mode?
  • Why is my average emission capped at 270nits, that seems ridiculously low even for normal SDR screens as comparison.

Cheers ๐Ÿ˜Š

Edit: It's a QD OLED
