I mean they gardened 10 years ago and I garden now. It's not that expensive.

I never said this was supposed to replace your full time job. And you can count labor costs per hour if you want but it doesn't count for literally every other task I have to do to continue living other than my actual job. Like I don't do an hour analysis breakdown of cooking a good meal from home. If I calculated cook time, cleaning, prep it would work out bad too. Yet it's still financially cheaper to eat at home. Because my domestic labor isn't compensated.

If i have $10 I can grow you more than $10 worth of grocery store tomatoes. If I pretend it's a job it'll be less per hour of course, but if I don't have another way to monetize that time it's a net gain. Honestly thinking of every facet of living life in terms of hourly wages is fucking depressing.

I mean they didn't farm the whole acre, their garden plot was maybe 10 x 10 ft.

More than I can do in my town home, but not crazy.

Also economies of scale is a poor argument when it comes to farming. Prices on many crops is fixed by the Government. So yes they can produce food much cheaper, but they fix the price to be higher. If it wasn't for the government corn at our current rate of production would be nearly free, but it's artificially inflated.

I wanted to come back and address a few things in an edit. It seems like you're trying to imply they weren't poor and I'd like to address a few things. Firstly in the deep south, especially 50 years ago when they got the property, land was cheap and available. Many people owned some land and not much else. Hence the concept of "land rich" "cash poor". Plus selling your home is not a smart way to pay the bills. Secondly, they got the land after my great grandparents died the land was generational anyway. Thirdly, sure they had a house, but that didn't stop them from having to pick and choose between food and medicine. That didn't change the fact that my grandfather had no shoes for a period. I bought him a pair when I found out, but that's how he was. He'd rather do without than ask for help.

To adress the second part of your attempted "gotcha" yes having space to garden is a prerequisite to gardening, then uh yeah it is. The other option is leasing some land for a small garden, and yeah of course that's going to be expensive

You claimed it was not effecting me personally. I gave you an example of how it was. Believe it or not having an income, housing, food to eat, and health insurance is actually pretty god damn important to me.

I made no more comments on my opinions of this government. I'm equally as disgusted by those things. What would you have me do? I go to my local protests regularly, but that is only so effective if at all. If you're going to suggest I personally go out and start an armed rebellion, don't. Neither you or I will be doing that, but you are more than welcome to prove me wrong.

We are almost certainly on the same side here. I'm just fearful these people will not face justice due to our country's historic precedence. I wish I could have your confidence that they will face appropriate punishment, but I'm skeptical and doubt the American people. So maybe instead of trying to make me into a strawman or attach false claims onto my comments, just take them for what they are and go find an argument worth arguing.

How the hell did you get that from my comment?

I feel the effects of this government daily. I haven't gotten good sleep in months and wonder every day if tomorrow is the day I lose my job. If I lose my career that I've dedicated my life to. All due to Trump's executive action.

It's a far stretch to go from my cynicism to assuming that I don't care or I'm unaffected by this regime. I do care and I feel the impacts.

If anything I'd argue I fear US history will repeat itself and these people will not only get away with it, but they will also continue their political careers. I'm afraid that's what will happen because it has repeatedly happened. I hope I am wrong. I hope this time is different. I will support actions and people that seek to end this madness anyway I can, but I fear nothing will happen

We allowed Confederates to serve in the Senate after the war. These people were part of an armed rebellion against the US government and we allowed them to take office

Bullshit. The united states has always failed to prosecute bad actors. They executed 1 general after the civil war. The rest of the Confederate government got to live out their days free. All of the governors that fought civil rights never got punished, nor did the cops that still tried to enforce segregation after the civil rights act. Nixon and everyone that worked with him got away with Watergate. What didn't Reagan get away with?

The US will only punish poor people with no political power if they dare try to change the system.

I hope I'm wrong this time, but US history is disappointing

I'd disagree, my grandparents were very very poor, but they grew up in farming country and had an acre. They wouldn't be able to have had a garden if it meant putting in more money than buying.

Even with my own gardening expirence I've put a lot of money in personally for longevity and ability to move my garden in the future, but I 100% could have tilled up soil and planted some tomatoes for very cheap.

It's a slow grow though. My yard has limited sun so I don't dedicate space to it just because it's slow

Why do you think police are trained to aim center mass

[–] arrow74@lemm.ee 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I argue with the hope of convincing those on the fence reading it. Appreciate the looking out though. You are right this person won't be convinced

I'm terrified that my SO is going to be dragged out of our home.

Doesn't seem like it. You valued your virtue signaling more.

Now my family has to worry about being able to eat and you worry about your SO. Frankly I worry about mine too

Neither of these things would be happening under a Kamala presidency, but that doesn't matter to you it seems.

You may find this hard to believe but you can vote for harm reduction and continue to protest the things you disagree with.

If you believe that the democrats lead us to fascism through a lack luster campaign then you acknowledge that a Democrat win would have resulted in the prevention of fascism. That means you chose fascism. I guess we all have to live with the consequences of your actions.

Also you underestimate the number of things I can be mad at. I can be mad at Trump, the Democrats and people like you all at the same time. You've made it very clear you can only comprehend one issue at a time, but trust me I have enough anger. I'll keep marching until they stop me ✌️

Frankly I don't care how you try to justify it. Project 2025 was not a secret. Now my sister lives in fear of how she'll make ends meet and provide Healthcare for my niece. And I am looking at being unemployed all due to Trump's policies.

Your logic doesn't change Trump's actions nor does it change the absolute devastation facing me and my family.

These plans were not a secret, and instead of casting a vote for less suffering you stayed home. Ensuring the suffering of not only people here, but an accelerated genocide.

But hey at least you think you have the moral high ground. Must be nice having the privilege to both judge and not feel the effects of Trump's policies at home. Daddy leave you an emerald mine too?

Both locally and during work travel through the southeastern US, I'm noticing a lot more agricultural fields being left fallow/abandoned. Usually by this point in the season fields would at least be cleared and planted, but many have been left un-plowed.

I'm also seeing a shift in crops being grown. Definently a lot more fields are growing hay than usual.

Farmers trying to respond to tariffs? Farmers opting to not lease lands leading to more empty fields?

Things in the US are increasingly unstable and the markets have begun reacting to that. It's not looking very promising right now.

Personally, I've begun trying to save as much money as possible and have stayed on top of my deep pantry. I've also stored even more food that I had before.

How is everyone else preparing for a recession? Any tips?

The national forest is doing more controlled burns, but I've never seen it so hazy before in town. It is currently raining ash across the whole city.

I saw a combination of TPD and State Troopers clearing out the very obvious gambling hall on the corner of Lake Bradford and Renfroe Valley St. They had a truck and we're loading up the machines. Couldn't find anything on the news about it yet, but I'll keep an eye out. I'm surprised the police let it operate for as long as they did.

Unrelated but I also saw a city bus had rear ended someone in front of the J. Edwin Larson Building on E. Gaines. No one was hurt, kinda funny

Edit: News article for gambling bust

Does anyone know of any bluesky accounts that feature tallahassee news and communities?

I did a general search, but didn't find much.

Also any other alternative social media options for tallahassee would be cool if you know any.

What is your unconventional prep. Something that you think is uncommon or weird, but will always keep extras of?

Personally I've been really big on keeping canned pumpkin on hand. While it's not the most nutrient dense food around it has the most fiber out of any canned item I can find and adds a new taste to everything. Goes great in mashed potatoes and soup.

Hi everyone this is just a simple welcome post. The community rules are simple, keep it related to Tallahassee and be nice.

So far there are no plans for the community, but suggestions are welcome. I hope to run this page in an open door and welcoming manner.
