Checkout 3rd party jellyfin android apps. Findroid is working pretty well. Theres another one called Streamyfin which is catching up and a third one called Fladder, which is maybe a bit too early in development.
This is already happening.
Not replying to everyone here, but wanted to make clear I obviously don't think that the motives behind this are sane.
Just pointing out that the system does need changing. This is probably not the right way but nothing else is happening to the system either. Even though scientists are complaining, their funding depends on publishing in such journals.
There's tons of stuff like that. E.g. open source Doom ports that still require the .wad files of the game.
Recently stumbled upon a remake of Dark Forces, called The Force Engine. High resolution play enabled, save games, crosshair. These kinds of mods aim to make the games better but they cannot legally provide the assets for them.
I had to look up what that is. Ew.
If you know how fucked up scientific publishing is, this honestly does not sound that crazy. Something needs to change how it currently works. Top journals charge top coin for publishing studies and scientists work for free to review those publications, then in most cases the studies are not even publicly available. And that's science funded by the government/the tax payer.

How many friggin Microsoft employees have a signature like that

Regarding backing up photos, Immich works well for that but is also a lot more than just photo backup, so maybe not a preference for you.
He said it's an honor, can't you read?
And here I am just using OsmAnd this entire time...
