Rich Hickey of Clojure fame did a great talk along these lines.

Don't go blaming a standard for one vendors crap implementation. If iPhone build quality disappoints you, that's fair.
A valid criticism of the standard is all the subtypes and the lack of standard cord labeling for them.
And at least in food, it's the same eight companies that own everything...
Except you can't use medical coverage as a recruiting tool for the military.

Any time I am cursed with a blank page it can give me something to fix instead of pulling fully formed thoughts out of my head. Personal favorite is work reviews. Brain dump my goals and accomplishments and have it format it up then edit for accuracy and tone.
