A massive data center for Meta’s AI will likely lead to rate hikes for Louisiana customers, but Meta wants to keep the details under wraps.

Holly Ridge is a rural community bisected by US Highway 80, gridded with farmland, with a big creek—it is literally named Big Creek—running through it. It is home to rice and grain mills and an elementary school and a few houses. Soon, it will also be home to Meta’s massive, 4 million square foot AI data center hosting thousands of perpetually humming servers that require billions of watts of energy to power. And that energy-guzzling infrastructure will be partially paid for by Louisiana residents.

The plan is part of what Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said would be “a defining year for AI.” On Threads, Zuckerberg boasted that his company was “building a 2GW+ datacenter that is so large it would cover a significant part of Manhattan,” posting a map of Manhattan along with the data center overlaid. Zuckerberg went on to say that over the coming years, AI “will drive our core products and business, unlock historic innovation, and extend American technology leadership. Let's go build! 💪”

It’s like we are consistently finding reasons to not use LLMs and are consistently having them shoved down our throats because they are the latest tech bubble. But don’t worry folks - capitalism is the best system for innovation!

Consider yourself blessed.

Who would have known? Asking AI things was never a real job?!

I’d really like to hope that this is a one off boomer brained judge and the precedent set is this was as stupid an idea as it gets, but every time I think shot can’t get dumber…

An AI avatar made to look and sound like the likeness of a man who was killed in a road rage incident addressed the court and the man who killed him: “To Gabriel Horcasitas, the man who shot me, it is a shame we encountered each other that day in those circumstances,” the AI avatar of Christopher Pelkey said. “In another life we probably could have been friends. I believe in forgiveness and a God who forgives. I still do.”

It was the first time the AI avatar of a victim—in this case, a dead man—has ever addressed a court, and it raises many questions about the use of this type of technology in future court proceedings.

The avatar was made by Pelkey’s sister, Stacey Wales. Wales tells 404 Media that her husband, Pelkey’s brother-in-law, recoiled when she told him about the idea. “He told me, ‘Stacey, you’re asking a lot.’”

The Dems are so good at being the opposition party that they are… complying with the fascists? This is pathetic.

Whether Trump was KGB or not, he likes Putin free from any outside influence. Just like he digs Erdoğan and Milei because they are authoritarians, he digs Putin too. How does this not compute?!

Paul Ryan was really into a band that sings a song about this until they got too political.

I feel you. I did not expect mine to crash but I am in Japan and streamed a movie from my server on the West coast of North America.

Do not let anyone convince you or be convinced that these dipshits are competent.

I appreciate the guide and effort to put these resources together. Some days I feel like I am screaming into a void because people have just accepted being the product that the likes of Google, Meta, and so on are selling.

Now that these companies have gone full mask off it is more important than ever to create inviting anti-fascist spaces on the web and I am so glad to have found this one! Thanks for keeping it running here. I hope I can contribute in a positive way beyond posting.

I just want to shout this from the rooftops. I can't believe I just found out about this. It has been a long time coming and I am pleased to share this news.
