My headcanon is that Earl of Sandwich had a dream one night where some mystery people from Sahara, the Sand Witches, showed up, and went like "yesss, a slice of bread, yesss, now put some stuff on it, yesss, maybe more slices of bread and more stuff and so on but that is optional. But we must go. Bye!" And thus was born a simple delicacy known worldwide.

I'm, like, OK, nuclear power isn't necessarily a bad thing.
But power plants like that should probably serve wider municipal needs.

Building a private nuclear power plant just to power a data center? Well that's clearly stupid.
Building a private nuclear power plant just to power a data center focused on a niche application? Well you know how that goes.

Also, look up SL-1. Disturbingly few Americans I've talked to have heard about that. Generally a good argument about why not every single thing should be powered by a tiny dedicated nuclear reactor.

The only job I've commuted to by car was, um, the summer job I had when I had my learner's permit when I was 18 or something.

I don't have a car, I've not driven a car with my full driver's permit, I think you need to renew it nowadays and I've not bothered with that for a couple of decades. We have buses here, why bother.

Just boomers trying to desperately ignore the fact that the generation after them is not only adult, but hitting the middle age. That can't be true, right? That'd mean that boomers are the objectively becoming old farts? Naah, the whinge must go on!

"No no no! Of course we won't fire people just before Christmas. That'd be evil. We'll fire them after the holidays. Duh."

We don't really have this whole tipping thing here.

I've had coffee in two places recently. One was in a hypermarket. I don't remember what the coffee costs there, because it came free with the meal. If the restaurant staff feel they don't get paid enough, I don't care if they get inspiration from France and torch every car in the parking lot. You see, I go to the hypermarket by foot. It's not that far away.

The other place I had coffee recently was in the train. 2.80€. I certainly hope the restaurant car staff gets paid well. They're technically railroad employees, after all. You don't fuck with railroad workers.

In middle of a couple of worldbuilding projects. Haven't really had much good ideas for the fantasy project lately.

Ah HA! Maybe I'll do some mild subversion of expectations.
Maybe one of the most famous sites in this world, where people come to visit from far and wide, has a tiny old withered tree.
...I mean, there could be a lot of legitimate logical reasons why this site could me important. Maybe the tree has a really fascinating story behind it.
Heck, there's probably many such places on our world too! Can think of at least one from the top of my mind.
I should write this down.

Last year I felt really crappy as far as my writing projects go, but in the last few months, if there's one thing I've learned it's that even smallest ideas can sometimes break the writer's block. Keep writing them down!

The Walt Disney Company is not ready for the amount of Steamboat Love ❤️🛳️❤️🛳️❤️ that the Rule34 folks will throw at them. Hot Steampipe Action is on the menu, folks.

Why not both? Nobody says you can't be both, right?

Vampire Survivors completely drew me in this year.

A couple of years ago, I was having dreams of designing train lines in Cities Skylines. A couple of days ago I was having a dream of weapon combos in Vampire Survivors. That's how you spot a good and influential game.

So yeah, Xfce looks the same as it did 10 years ago.

And?

Desktop environment is meant to launch apps and give me windows and maybe have a file manager. Xfce does that. It's a desktop environment.

Hey, "modern" desktop environment enthusiasts, if you bring Compiz back from the dead, give us luddites a call, will you? Ohhhh you kids should have seen it back in the day. Windows and Mac users saw Compiz in action and were, like, "wat." You don't get them to react that way to modern Linux desktops, no. And all that is lost now. Thanks Wayland.

This is from early 2021, when a lot of sea turtles were cold-stunned by unseasonally cool waters. Rescuers let them warm up a bit and gave them a rare treat of experiencing incredible speed outside of water.

I've run into people who play Smash Bros these days and have somehow NOT heard of the F-Zero: GP Legend clip. This thing got spread around as a meme much during SSBMelee days... so much so that SSBBrawl Subspace Emissary cutscenes directly reference it!

Anyway. Here's the original Falcon Punch. Through the FUCKING GALAXY.

A lot of people are boasting here like "well I just deleted my 15+ year account with quintillion karma."

I'm not going to delete my account yet (but probably won't be posting anything on Reddit either). Instead, I came up with a Strange Hobby.

Because password managers are so ubiquitous and easy to use and everyone should use one, I somehow found a complete list of all Reddit throwaway accounts I had over the years. (You know, from back when you could create accounts in seconds and Reddit didn't make you sign a blood pact or whatever.)

So I've been deleting those accounts. There was a pile of them.

And I like to every time I delete an account, a little siren goes off in Reddit HQ and Spez is like "Aaaaagggh! Not another one!"

As I recall, Reddit really dragged their heels in implementing GDPR-mandated data checkouts, citing technical challenges and privacy issues, but I'm sure it was more about the technical challenges and laziness (old codebase that has kind of sucked since forever and they're not keen on touching it). This was when the law went into effect in 2018.

I requested archives of my data from Reddit as per GDPR a few weeks ago, and it's still pending. And the page said "oh, uh, we'll provide them within 30 days." ...which is well within the letter of the law, if not the spirit. Other sites I've requested my data from can provide it within days, usually.

All I can say as someone who's been perplexed about Reddit's tech side for a long time is that it's pretty damn emblematic of the whole site.
