Fair, but then again, iOS autocorrect isn't exactly not AI.

Most people aren't taking the time to type in ctrl+shift+u+2+0+1+4 when a regular minus-dash would get the point across with a single keystroke. But there is enough of a distinction that some people (like you and I) will use the proper punctuation when there is an opportunity to do so.

What I find far more suspicious is the unicode hyphen, because no human would be able to tell the difference, and would therefore always choose to input a minus.

The amount of corruption uncovered by this investigation up to now is bad enough, but it really seems like we're looking at the tip of an iceburg.

My intuition says it's probably LLM training. AI companies have been increasingly DDoSing the entire web for a while now.

We might even survive long enough to see Ekholm come back

Uhh, what timezone are we talking about here?

From the library of Jurgen Leitner, no doubt.

"Just let me pander to these fringe extremists so they stop wanting to leave my party"

Better idea. Don't do that. Tell the fringe extremists to kick bricks, set the UCP on fire, and let the rest of us have 4 years of actual prosperity under the NDP.

Imagine basing your appeal on the equivalent of a courtroom seance. This is the world we live in.

It would be exceedingly rare for one party to get enough votes to form a majority under PR.

But beyond that, we have the non-partisan senate, the governor general, and the Charter (via the judicial branch) to all act as obstacles to unjust legislation. Canada is no stranger to majority governments under our current system, and the checks 'n balances have worked pretty well so far, for the most part.

Barring a trump-style lunatic jacking up the executive branch (which can absolutely happen, that's something us citizens have to be careful not to vote for), PR should make it slightly harder for tyranny of the majority to happen. Take a look at New Zealand in 1996 for a relatively recent example of PR adoption and how their voting patterns have changed after the switch.

Odds are pretty damn good, I'd say.

Still, it's a distinction barely worth making. Garden varity pigs doing this shit are equally as unjust as brand name Pigs doing it.

I'm interested to know how that works. Can amazon not treat the addressee as the "importer" like Canada Post can?

Bit of a long read, but definitely eye opening.

The scary part is, they didn't end up finding out how people's identities are being stolen, and both CRA and H&R block were somewhat hostile to the investigation.

Tax season is coming up, stay safe out there. Be very careful about who you give your personal information to, and keep a close eye on all your accounts.

I'm making a thread to discuss both games today: -13:00 EST / 10:00 PST ― CAN vs. FIN -20:00 EST / 17:00 PST ― USA vs. SWE

Team Canada news: Cale Makar is playing, Binnington gets the start.

If the first game ends in regulation, the winner will advance to the final against USA. In case it goes to overtime, the door will be open for Sweden to advance with a regulation win.

UPDATE: Matthew Tkachuk (lower body) will not play tonight, Chris Kreider will dress instead. Charlie McAvoy will also not play (I think? The article just says he will be replaced by Jake Sanderson, nothing else). Oettinger will start for USA; SWE goalie still tba.

UPDATE 2: As per Elliote Friedman just now, Mattias Ekholm and Viktor Arvidsson are out for team Sweden (rip oilers), Leo Carlsson and Rasmus Andersson are in. Linus Ullmark is expected to start.

UPDATE 3:

Results of early gameCAN 5 - 3 SWE

★ Nathan Mackinnon (2G) ★★ Connor McDavid (1G, 1A) ★★★ Mikael Granlund (2G)

Finland roared back from a 4-0 deficit with seven minutes remaining in the game, causing a spike in heart rate across Canada when they made it a 4-3 game in the final minute. Sidney Crosby released the tension with an empty-net goal a few seconds later, punching Canada's ticket to the final on Thursday. The USA vs. SWE game later today is officially for pride only.

UPDATE 4: It turns out Elliotte Friedman was wrong, because I'm sitting here watching Ekholm and Arvidsson clearly playing. Rakell and Zibanejad are the actual scratches. Brady Tkachuk has also gone down with an injury. That's rough for team USA.

FINAL UPDATE:

Late game resultsUSA 1 - 2 SWE

★ Jesper Bratt (1G) ★★ Samuel Ersson (.969 SV%) ★★★ Zach Werenski (1A)

Team USA battled hard despite a bite from the injury bug (missing Matthews, McAvoy, both Tkachuks), but ultimately fell short of the win. Sweden was able to hold on to a narrow lead thanks in large part to a stellar goaltending performance from Samuel Ersson.

Thanks for hanging out everyone, it's been fun. Someone else will have to post the game thread on Thursday, as I'm going to be busy until at least the 2nd period. I'm looking forward to joining the discussion later on when I get the chance.

Until next time, take 'er easy, buds!

Let's see if we can drum up some activity around here

The Edmonton Oilers have signed forward Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year contract extension starting in 2025-26 with an average annual value (AAV) of $14 million.

EDMONTON, AB – The Edmonton Oilers announced this morning they will not match contract offer sheets presented by the St. Louis Blues to forward Dylan Holloway and defenceman Philip Broberg.

As per NHL compensation guidelines, the Oilers will receive the Blues' second and third-round selections in the 2025 NHL Draft.

In a separate transaction with St. Louis, the Oilers have acquired the rights to defenceman Paul Fischer as well the Blues' third-round selection in the 2028 NHL Draft in exchange for future considerations.

Fischer is an unsigned selection from the 2023 NHL Draft (138th overall) entering his second season with Notre Dame (NCAA).

He stunned Markstrom with the intense, prolonged eye contact lmao

Effective July 1st, businesses are no longer permitted to provide new plastic shopping bags to customers. Paper bags now come with a mandatory minimum fee of $0.15 as well.

Happy waste reducing, y'all!
