Dammit NZ, I thought you guys were cool :(
I know nothing about Goff other than this one convent, but on the basis of that, the dude is a legend.
Edit: I've not been paying super close attention to NZ domestic politics, but this:
Rings of some serious internal conflict in the Government.
Peters is known to stir up trouble, and is a brilliant politician in the worst way.
The current government is a coalition of egos that was always tenuous from day 1.
I don't think you can argue our government is "cool" right now. Like many other countries, there was a hard swing to the right in the post COVID fallout.
Maybe the prime minister should tell the guy to rehire him. Make sure he fully understands who is who
Unfortunately according to the article the PM said he didn't overstep his bounds. So either he genuinely agrees with the decision, or he feels he doesn't have the political capital to override his minister. Probably both.
Winston Peters wasn't joking.
If the Prime Minister overstepped too far, Peters can literally bring down the government. The PM's party does not have the numbers to govern alone.
Peters has been a politician for 50 years. When NZ switched to proportional representation, Peters positioned himself as a centrist and often holds the balance of power.
