Maybe the prime minister should tell the guy to rehire him. Make sure he fully understands who is who

Unfortunately according to the article the PM said he didn't overstep his bounds. So either he genuinely agrees with the decision, or he feels he doesn't have the political capital to override his minister. Probably both.

Winston Peters wasn't joking.

If the Prime Minister overstepped too far, Peters can literally bring down the government. The PM's party does not have the numbers to govern alone.

Peters has been a politician for 50 years. When NZ switched to proportional representation, Peters positioned himself as a centrist and often holds the balance of power.
