2-3 instances (-50 - -80 combined reply and post downvotes)

  • I called out the usage of word gay to describe a cruise ship (news was in lines of - gay cruise saved somebody) - i said that it essentially reductive to just call a person gay, and we should probably change the phrasing. People misunderstood me for being homophobic, and yelled a lot - I had to explain a lot on why it is not great to call out someone "gay" a gay randomly, as it hurts acceptance. People countered me by saying I am just getting triggered by the gay word, and i must be gay-phobic.

  • I once compared trimming of nails of cat, to declawing them (I know they are different)- got downvotes because people kept re iterating that trimming is not harful at all or it is not declawing (which i already knew and wrote in my original comment), no pain involved, to which I replied that this effects their predatory abilities. Some people replied that for old cats, it is more painful for them to get their nails stuck into things, and I agreed with them. there was no clear resolve. I was more aligned with cats naturally wearing their claws out, others said for indoor cats it is hard to do that. It did not help my case that I am not a cat owner myself, and so "I should not have a say on how other owners treat their cats)

  • I once made a post "to preach" non violence (this was after some "eat the rich" and "kill the nazi" posts after trump re-election) - got a lot of backlash - people called me out to be too naive, they say it never works, then i gave sources of it working elsewhere, then they say circumstances were different, then I gave them american examples, they proceeded to yell back at me. Maybe I was confused of being trump supporter.

I sometimes forget Internet is a hivemind, and nuanced converstaion is basically impossible. People often start calling me out stuff, and then start focussing on grammatical/spelling mistakes instead of the actual argument. I hoped lemmy would be different, by the votes I see on many "political" posts, I am reminded that people are really no different. It does not help the fact that I moderate a few communities, and I have to read stuff. I understand that we do not like musk and trump, and I am okay (actually happy, but that is a seperate point) that their are protests happening and they are taking Ls. But If I call out, that we should not consider their "depression" a "uplifting news" - I am called a fascist supporter. I do not understand how quickly or far do people make jumps from a point a to point z.

Sorry for the rant

I appreciate your use of ambiguous examples that don't just paint you as a hero.

People online feel so justified in attacking whole groups of people. Often, because that group attacks whole groups of people. Gotta laugh.

thanks, it was not intentional though. I don't post or comment often, and so have not been down voted much, and hence do not have a large enough pool to select examples to make a point. Maybe that is just who I am. I do not want to be a hero. Heros have to share their grog/meat with everyone, and I do not want to.

A fair assessment of yourself. Well done you.
