I dared suggest the humor of Rockstar studios is bad and stated I didn't much care for GTA6. That shit got NUKED.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 13 points 1 week ago

I've never been majorly downvoted. Most I've got was around minus 30 on reddit cos I said something feminist.

[–] Phenomephrene@thebrainbin.org 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The topic was "What band has the most annoying fans?", and the Manowar fandom found my comment.

[–] Zero22xx@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I wish Reddit had a way to sort by 'worst of all time' but going by my 'controversial' comments, it's either something feminist or it's for having an opinion in SquaredCircle, the pro wrestling sub.

The SquaredCircle community here is still nice because there's not a lot of people yet but on Reddit, the biggest sin that you can commit is having an not mainstream opinion about something.

Edit: on a side note, I really should delete my Reddit account now.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yep, say something feminist and the downvotes pour in. Or worse, the bile filled comments. Wear them with pride!

I suggest you go down in flames on reddit. It's not hard, just post something that's fuck Musk and pro Luigi. Then for good measure upvote lots of similar posts. You'll be banned before you finish upvoting!

[–] Zero22xx@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm already banned lol, I just haven't deleted and closed shop yet. And believe it or not, the comment that got me banned was me shitting on the manosphere, in a subreddit that was literally meant for shitting on misogyny.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 7 points 1 week ago

No shit! I am 0% surprised 🙄

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 4 points 1 week ago

There are a few hot button topics that seem to garner huge numbers of downvotes. Feminism. China. Anything related to Gaza (pro- or anti-genocide). Elon Musk. The list goes on and is often really bizarre when you see it spelled out.

I once posted to a collapse/mental health subreddit shortly before the Reddit API changes. I was dealing with a lot of stuff personally on top of helping a friend deal with a former friend/coworker who was being a total creep towards her. I needed to vent and was sharing my experiences on that subreddit.

Half of the comments were a mix of support, thankfulness for the actions I had taken or thankfulness of simply acknowledging what women go through.

The other half... I was being called names and was accused of spreading hate speech. The moderator, a woman, spoke up and every angry commenter piled on to her since she was a woman.

Over 200 up votes and over 100 down votes in a 24 hour period. The moderator deleted my post and messaged me directly to apologize. She told me I broke no Reddit rules or subreddit rules but she feared her subreddit would be taken down by all the threats about spreading hate speech. I had no issue with her decision, I didn't want her hard work to be taken away and I already had my chance to vent.

So my last post and interaction on reddit was removed due to hate speech for acknowledging women and their experiences. Wild.

Leaving reddit was pretty fucking easy after that.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yep! Manosphere types love to see themselves as oppressed, and hate women being acknowledged as victims

[–] confusedpuppy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I had been on reddit since the Digg exodus. My last Reddit account was 6 years old with less than 50 comments total. I guess because I curated my own list of subreddits where I lurked that I was quite insulated from that type of behaviour.

It was quite the shock to me when I got such a hostile reaction. It shouldn't have been such a surprise, the signs were always there. I was there the entire time. Experiencing that post and reaction really grounded me to the reality of who used Reddit and why other people had such a negative view of Reddit users.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yep reddit can get really horrible sometimes. It's just astonishing I'll bet they'd never speak to anyone IRL like that! What was the digg exodus about? I wasn't on reddit back then

[–] confusedpuppy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Digg and the mass exodus happened a long time ago so I could be wrong at parts. The very simple story is that Digg stopped allowing most people to submit links or something like that. I think they wanted to curate their own links instead of user submitted content.

Since Digg took away what made it popular, most people migrated to Reddit which at the time was more tech/developer focused.

Reddit filled the gap quite well and was more proactive about freedom of expression and knowledge. That slowly faded as time went on and it's userbase grew. Throw in a few controversies and we have the Reddit of today.

That's one of the reasons why leaving for Lemmy was so easy. I have seen it happen before. I'm already one foot out the door with Lemmy. PieFed has been making amazing progress and I know there's interest and progress in making a migration tool for Lemmy communities/instances to switch over.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 4 points 1 week ago

Yep history has a habit of repeating itself

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

On a thread about putting catsup on hotdogs in Chicago:

If the customer is wrong and wants to ruin a perfectly good sausage, yes I will object!

Look, if I was an art dealer, and someone wanted to buy an original by one of the Dutch masters and then put catsup on it, I would refuse to sell it to her.

In Chicago, sausages are fine art.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

God downvoting is weird. Were they offended by your sausage beliefs? Passionately pro ketchup? Bizarre

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 week ago

passionately pro-catsup, believe it or not

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

In Chicago, sausages are fine art.

This alone would have me downvoting you for the sheer chutzpah of putting "Chicago", "hot dog", and "fine art" together into a post without intervening negatives. Hell drop Chicago and I'd still downvote for the chutzpah.

2-3 instances (-50 - -80 combined reply and post downvotes)

  • I called out the usage of word gay to describe a cruise ship (news was in lines of - gay cruise saved somebody) - i said that it essentially reductive to just call a person gay, and we should probably change the phrasing. People misunderstood me for being homophobic, and yelled a lot - I had to explain a lot on why it is not great to call out someone "gay" a gay randomly, as it hurts acceptance. People countered me by saying I am just getting triggered by the gay word, and i must be gay-phobic.

  • I once compared trimming of nails of cat, to declawing them (I know they are different)- got downvotes because people kept re iterating that trimming is not harful at all or it is not declawing (which i already knew and wrote in my original comment), no pain involved, to which I replied that this effects their predatory abilities. Some people replied that for old cats, it is more painful for them to get their nails stuck into things, and I agreed with them. there was no clear resolve. I was more aligned with cats naturally wearing their claws out, others said for indoor cats it is hard to do that. It did not help my case that I am not a cat owner myself, and so "I should not have a say on how other owners treat their cats)

  • I once made a post "to preach" non violence (this was after some "eat the rich" and "kill the nazi" posts after trump re-election) - got a lot of backlash - people called me out to be too naive, they say it never works, then i gave sources of it working elsewhere, then they say circumstances were different, then I gave them american examples, they proceeded to yell back at me. Maybe I was confused of being trump supporter.

I sometimes forget Internet is a hivemind, and nuanced converstaion is basically impossible. People often start calling me out stuff, and then start focussing on grammatical/spelling mistakes instead of the actual argument. I hoped lemmy would be different, by the votes I see on many "political" posts, I am reminded that people are really no different. It does not help the fact that I moderate a few communities, and I have to read stuff. I understand that we do not like musk and trump, and I am okay (actually happy, but that is a seperate point) that their are protests happening and they are taking Ls. But If I call out, that we should not consider their "depression" a "uplifting news" - I am called a fascist supporter. I do not understand how quickly or far do people make jumps from a point a to point z.

Sorry for the rant

[–] Didros@beehaw.org 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I appreciate your use of ambiguous examples that don't just paint you as a hero.

People online feel so justified in attacking whole groups of people. Often, because that group attacks whole groups of people. Gotta laugh.

[–] sga@lemmings.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

thanks, it was not intentional though. I don't post or comment often, and so have not been down voted much, and hence do not have a large enough pool to select examples to make a point. Maybe that is just who I am. I do not want to be a hero. Heros have to share their grog/meat with everyone, and I do not want to.

[–] Didros@beehaw.org 3 points 1 week ago

A fair assessment of yourself. Well done you.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

People get real salty about Steam's monopoly.

And of course anything short of picking one camp and saying they did nothing wrong, vis-a-vis Gaza.

Oh, and not being a tankie on ML. I'm not looking that shit up. Half of it's removed by mod for honesty about Russia or China, and the other half involves people I should have blocked much sooner. (Alright, this exchange was amusing.)

Wading into the GameStop cult was fun.

Wait no I found my lowest total score: MOBA players screeching about what they'd like to pretend I said.

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

The steam this is really funny when you realize they were the first to popularize the idea of an App Store and being a middleman.

Previously there were many "stores" but they only listed apps and left it up to the developer to distribute and handled the payment system.

There were separate payment providers that took a cut but nothing approaching 30%, it was often a flat fee plus 2-3% to cover the credit card processing cost.

Steam created the app industry and somehow Apple takes all the heat.

The only thing Apple added was an option to charge as little as $1. The fee on those independent providers was $1+ by itself.

-50ish

Someone was talking about how the would would be different if women were fertile for 1 month of the year and gave off a scent that makes me lust after them.

And I pointed out how horrific that would be for women.

Whenever I call religion a scam ran by pedos to control the ignorant mess.

Idc how much you like your invisible forgiveness daddy, he’s not real and not a justification for the religious wars going on.

-33.

One tech article (stopping AI scrapers taking your site down) I found, I posted on Lemmy and it got 135 upvotes and some interesting discussion.

But when I posted another article from that same website (social media platforms that allow free speech, because it actually mentioned Lemmy), the response was... less enthusiatic. Actually, it's my only post that's negative.

[–] Nachtnebel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

The article you posted mentions kiwi farms as a "free-speech" social media.

[–] klu9@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

I see, I wasn't familiar with Kiwifarms

[–] DearMoogle@lemmy.today 4 points 1 week ago

I largely just ignore the inbox lol. Way more trouble than it’s worth

[–] Whateley@lemm.ee 4 points 1 week ago

Back during its peak, I posted "White supremacy is bad" in a goobergate-aligned sub. Admittedly, I knew I was kicking a hornet nest but watching all those manboy shitheads climb over each other to call me slurs, ironically scream "triggered" in my metaphorical face, and make "literally Hitler" jokes while smugly tipping their fedoras was deeply satisfying.

-20 is my most downvoted thing ever on reddit. Still found it funny today, 8 years later.

A Reddit post on ShitRedditSays that says If I could change reality, I would make small objects orbit fat people as a way to constantly embarrass them for having enough mass for their big gulp to be caught in orbit. My comment is displayed below: I'm fat and I find this funny, really funny

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 5 points 1 week ago

Shut up fat person you're not allowed to have emotions! How dare you

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 3 points 1 week ago

Never used reddit and on Lemmy I have the separated vote counts turned off.

[–] Didros@beehaw.org 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I was in the 2007scape (old-school runescape) sub and defended keeping a slur blocked in chat despite the fact it is a nickname for transmissions...

Think I went -250 on that one.

"Do people only like racing games for the graphics" it was in r/pcmr I think got me down to negative triple digits, learned that day asking why someone likes something is bad.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Hard to recall, but I think it was a reddit comment. It was in the hundreds of down votes.

Thing is, I can't really recall what it was about. Only reason I can recall the numbers is from overwriting comments when I left reddit. I don't have any devices on me currently to log into a modified app, so I can't immediately check what the post itself was about to remind me.

It was probably something about politics or religion, since those were the two easiest things to get shit on at reddit, and I'm way off of the popular zones of either there. Hell, I'm not exactly dead middle of the sentiment here on lemmy lol

Edit: my favorite heavily down voted post was an a marvel game sub though. The context is that kraven the hunter and squirrel girl were in the game, and there was some discussion about them in general.

I got hit by the muse and mashed out a few paragraphs of squirrel girl defeating kraven by having sex with him, using increasingly absurd descriptions. I thought I had it saved somewhere, but I can't find it, or I'd paste it in just for the ridiculousness of it.

It may help to know that I used to write custom erotica for discerning readers with plenty of cash. So it isn't like I had some deep fantasy thing going on regarding squirrel girl and just had to share it. I mean, she is frisky and has those adorable teeth, but it isn't like she's my waifu or anything. Like, if someone made me a waifu pillow of her, it isn't like I'd kick my wife out of bed. I'd just make her slide over so there was enough room for me to cuddle the pillow.

for real, it isn't a fetish for squirrel looking women at all.

okay, it is, but you weren't the ones that got stuck in an elevator at a furry convention with some yiff fueled con goers with drop panels in squirrel outfits.

okay, that's not true, I'm the one that hit the stop button and pretend it was stuck. But I swear, it was just as a prank

okay, that's not true, I wanted some squirrel tail. But have you ever seen squirrels frisking around the yard all seductively, those tails twitching in invitation?

!you think this comment might end up my most down voted one on lemmy?!<

Probably one of my posts on /r/GenderCritical, before I was banned.

[–] Goretantath@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Idk, never cared to check. How do you find out without using the inbox?

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 1 points 1 week ago

You can look on your profile. Every post and comment you've ever made is listed there, and if you haven't turned off vote reporting it shows votes too.

I bet it was something about the Israeli - Palestine conflict
