Maybe some oil on it? I once restored an axe head in a similar way and was told that sanding it back to shiny would let it corrode again
I used a long oil soak on my Dad's old hammers before any sanding. But hammers aren't intended for sharpening.

Trust the good ol' ball peen hammer - best modern substitute for a medieval war hammer. Though I guess you could up the nasty by squaring off the head and putting a point on it if that's your jam.
Medieval weapons already had that covered π¬
It was designed to pierce armour
And skulls. Saw a doco about the battle of Tothill Fields (one of the bloodiest in UK history) - the skulls with the square holes punched through them were victims of a war hammer in action.
