If I was in the UK, I'd probably already be in jail for this. Or for carrying a 3" pocketknife, or calling my neighbor a fascist and his wife a fat Nazi, or whatever.

American's without guns, here's your preview. They would already be kicking down our doors if there were zero fear of consequence.

Do Americans not have cops already kicking down doors? Only with guns drawn, and dead dogs in their wake.

Breonna Taylor would also like a word, but she was killed in a no knock raid on the wrong house while she slept.

Imagine what they would be like if they had zero fear of breaking in.

Calmer, less equipped, more dogs alive.

I think government leader are forgetting that one of the core ideas of liberal democracy is to protect individual rights.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

I will indeed protect our individual rights if need be. That's not macho talk. Masked men are not dragging my brown wife out of our house, kicking and begging and screaming. I've made the decision, drawn the line, I will fight and die first.

To your point, I think Americans have forgotten that protecting individual rights is a fight that never ends. And yes, sometimes we will die doing so.

American cops have been kicking down doors and shooting the people inside for a long time now. And there's no evidence Americans are using their guns to fight fascism. The gun-loving Americans support fascism and would sooner use their guns to fight democracy.

And how bad do you think it would be at this point in history if they could smash doors with zero risk?

Cops are notorious cowards. For example, when people show up armed to protests they're very polite and professional. Unarmed protests? Remember Portland?

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The main difference the USA's armed population seems to make is that the cops come in shooting.

And that's where we're at in history, can't be changed by disarming or pretending. Sucks, but it is.
