US retail coffee prices surged 21% year-over-year in August, the largest annual increase since October 1997, according to Thursday's Consumer Price Index. The monthly 4% jump marks the steepest rise in 14 years. Trump administration tariffs on major coffee exporters -- 50% on Brazil, 20% on Vietnam, and 10% on Colombia -- are driving costs higher as 99% of US coffee consumption relies on imports.

J.M. Smucker plans its third price increase this winter for Folgers and Cafe Bustelo brands after raising prices in May and August. New Orleans chain French Truck Coffee has implemented a 4% tariff surcharge. Starbucks expects peak cost impacts in 2026 due to its advance purchasing practices. KPMG chief economist Diane Swonk predicts prices will exceed historical records as Brazilian tariff effects reach retail shelves.

I dunno what I'm gonna do when my stash runs out. About 6 months ago, coffee was on sale and I bought as much as I could store in the crisper drawers of my downstairs fridge. I've probably got about another 6 month's supply and am probably going to be aghast when I have to buy more 😔

I wonder if you could buy directly from the producer. They'd benefit from it, I'd benefit from it, and roasting seems like a fun thing to do.

800% tariffs and you need to order 1000lbs.

they won't sell you a bag.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm in Europe, and why wouldn't someone sell you a bag?

[–] Fiivemacs@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

the producers wouldn't. that would be the same as going to a farm that typically sells 1000s of lbs of zucchini, and asking for enough for supper.

you wouldn't be worth their time, no offense.. they are in it for the bulk purchases.

I'm talking a bout a coffe sac, 30 or 60 kilos. Not a 250 gram package 😋

They get paid under 4€/kilo. The price for mediocre coffee where I live is 18-20€/kilo.

I'm seeing around USD$400/EUR 340 for a 50 lb/23 kg bag.

But will any given bag be any good? And how long is it going to take you to consume all of it?

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

In my view it's both to pay the farmers better, and to make a "fun" experiment, so yes it might not be perfect.

I'd probably drink 23 kilos in 23 weeks, but I have switched to lots of decaf recently 😔.

Where do you find those kind of prices?

[–] zabadoh@ani.social 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I googled for "50lb bag of coffee"

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

In France I only find empty coffee bags, gotta up my google-fu 🥲

[–] zabadoh@ani.social 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

duckduckgo works as well.

Some sell in 50 lb boxes.

A lot of those websites sell 100 lb bags too.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I only find sites explaining but not selling (especially to France) like this one for example.

Any links for someone shipping to France/the EU?

🥲

[–] zabadoh@ani.social 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's difficult to find a result because my IP is in the US, but Google did cough up this place that day they ship to the EU

Hey thank you!

It's the same price as store bought coffee over here though...

[–] zabadoh@ani.social 1 points 1 day ago

Maybe find a local roaster, and ask if they can sell you a bag of green beans for a little commission?

[–] AMillionMonkeys@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Roasting is fun! Not sure about buying directly from the farms, but I suspect most people get their green beans from an importer. I usually use BurmanCoffee.com, but SweetMarias.com is also very popular.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I have looked around and green beans are as expensive as roasted here 🤷🏼‍♀️. I read somewhere the farmers get ridiculously low prices, and there is lots of speculation that raised prices (plus packaging, supermarkets benefits etc etc) so why not cut out the middle man?

Sounds fun for sure though, crack crack!!

I buy Republic Tea straight from their website. Last order cost me 12.50. And the time before that was 11.75. So definitely price has increased.
