What if we stopped growing so many soybeans for export, and instead grew crops to feed human people in the United States? I know I know, it’s crazy talk.

Soybeans are used to feed people in the US.

[–] Hylactor@sopuli.xyz 19 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Only half. The other half is for export.

[–] onslaught545@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Then use the other half to feed people in the US.

And do something to fight hunger in the United States? Sounds socialist. Better to let it rot in the fields /s

What by teaching people how to eat Tofu? Can you see how well that would go over in rural America? They're still reminiscing about the government cheese.

Historically it's because the soybean market is growing soy and selling it to China. I think the US demand for soybeans for human consumption is met by US production. You'd have to create a lot of demand to make soybeans worth growing if they aren't selling overseas

We all know the administration's policies are the cause of our current woes. That does not mean a restructuring of current food production practices is not warranted.

[–] SebaDC@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 weeks ago

It means exactly that.

When your food producers are already bleeding money, they have 0 chance of getting the financing to rethink their whole production. It's too late for that.

Especially since the whole agriculture was resting on the shoulders of immigrants and they are now gone. The system needs to find a new balance before any producer can start changing their practices.

The only one who will survive are the ones who have enough money on the side.

But worry not. The farms will be taken over by private equity, right before the administration allows slaves again.
