Of 42 ships in the Global Sumud Flotilla, one made it into the waters outside Gaza. It remains unknown whether they made it to Gaza or if they have been arrested by the Israeli navy just when they were about to enter.

~~While not officially confirmed, the following footage allegedly shows their arrival in Gaza:~~

edit: It seems this post has been taken down, it was probably a video from another occasion.

Other sources claim that the Mikeno too has been captured by Israel: https://mastodon.social/@Al_Quds_News14/115303483176696689

According to Israel via Al Jazeera, they have seized "all but one" of the vessels carrying aid:
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2025/9/2/live-geta-thunberg-once-more-on-board-sumud-flotilla-sailing-for-gaza

This could refer to the Marinette, which is still just north of Cairo, or to the Mikeno, whose status is not confirmed:

In either case these people are heroes. The person on the right side (their left) top row is the Fediverse's own @Vegard@fribygda.no, who is also the source of this image: https://fribygda.no/@Vegard/115299846437410236

Update:

It is with heavy hearts and sadness that we announce the Global Sumud Flotilla vessel "Mikeno" was seized by the Israeli Navy.

The captain, a hero, defied direct Israeli orders to shut his engine down and seize progression. He then went completely dark, shutting off all electronics and maneuvering past their blockade. The "Mikeno" made it within 7NM of the coast of Gaza. The ship was then intercepted, seized, and boarded by naval commandos deployed from multiple Israeli warships with drones flying overhead.

I've heard about the Global Sumud Flotilla a couple times in the last few days. Could someone explain to me who's behind it, what the goal is, and what they're doing rn?

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 103 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Israel is blockading Gaza and causing a famine. The flotilla has humanitarian aid and Israel isn’t allowing it in. They attacked the boats in international waters and kidnapped the crews.

Attacking boats in international waters and kidnapping crews? Sounds like the work of pirates. Isn't it legal to sink pirates in international waters?

Idk if its legal to sink pirates but good luck with trying that.

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 0 points 3 days ago

Legal or not, these people are WAY better at violence than humanitarians are.

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 24 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I knew about the blockade, I'm glad something's being done about it. I've only heard about them in the past few days, is it a newer coalition, or can the news just not ignore them anymore?

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 54 points 4 days ago

This one is much bigger, I believe 50 ships. What’s unique is that there’s former parliamentarians and some more famous activists so they’re getting more attention. They’re also live-streaming and have a website and live tracker.

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 13 points 4 days ago

It has been going on for a while. You can follow the next wave here, which is currently only nine ships: https://thousandmadleens.fr/tracker/

I have heard rumours a large number of ships have left from Turkey, but I'm not sure where to find information on that.

Let's be clear part off those attacks were incendiary drone strikes trying to set the occupied ships on fire when they were like a thousand miles away.

It was a collection of ~40 ships with aid trying to get to Gaza. They were all intercepted by IDF pirates last night in international waters. The tracking on the boat mentioned in this post probably just glitched out because it hasnt moved the whole day and the IDF would never allow them to get that close to Gaza. The arrested people on these boats will probably just be fed some propaganda movies like last time and deported back to Europe. The aid will probably be thrown away or used by the IDF.

That really sucks. Is there any way to actually help Palestinians get the supplies they need, or is it all goibg to end up helping Israel?

Some things you can do to help is:

  1. Protest, pressure your government to do more
  2. Donate to the UN - in terms of fighting starvation, they are the most likely to succeed
  3. Donate to or join the next wave of the Flotilla - this is less likely to succeed bringing large amounts of food and medicine, but it is good for highlighting Israel's genocide and cause international pressure to do something about the situation.
  4. Give directly to families in Gaza - https://gaza-verified.org/ is a repository of verified people in Gaza on the fediverse. Donating directly can help save someone's life, but in the end they are fighting over resources that are scarce by design. The situation can really only get better once Netanyahu is put to justice.
  5. Rally behind institutions that matter. Voice your support for the ICJ and the ICC.

Have there been any other attempts to break the blockade? I heard something about the Houthis attacking some Israeli ships at some point. And who's running the whole thing? Is it supported by any specific government?

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has been at it since 2010. They are run by activists and generally lack government support, as governments fear "diplomatic incidents".

The Italian navy sent a ship to help guarantee the safety of the Global Sumud Flotilla, but then withdrew it out of fear of confrontation with Israel. Spain sent a ship, but decided only to help rescue lives if necessary. As far as I know this is the closest we've gotten to government intervention, if you don't count occasional statements and obviously everything the Israeli government is doing.

As for breaking the blocade, there has been some attempts at airdropping food, there's 40 Turkish boats on their way last time I checked, and the UN is really working their asses of within their set of constraints to get aid in. But nobody is really capable of doing anything real at the moment.

So the blockade has been going on THAT long? Sorry, I didn't realize, I was just a little kid then. Jesus Christ, how has it taken this long for even the slightest recognition that Israel is genociding Palestinians? Oh yeah, conservatives hate Muslims even more than they hate Jews.

The genocide started in 1948, but it's been bouncing back and forth a bit. Netanyahu has been prime minister for the majority of the last decades, and he is a profoundly evil person. Like, in the 90s a prime minister of Israel signed a peace treaty with Palestine, so the Netanyahu and his ideological allies had him assassinated. The widow after Rabin directly blames Netanyahu.

He never wanted peace, but genocide. That's why he has been actively supporting Hamas—they share a common goal of maximum bloodshed. Any peaceful and stable Palestinian leadership is a threat to the Zionists. Netanyahu has controlled the media, attacked the courts, and did his best to brainwash the population through fear-based propaganda.

Today it is a genocide on Palestinians. Tomorrow Israel will reap the consequences of Netanyahu's terror regime. This is not a comforting thought - I have friends (well, one colleague) in Israel, and she's in the streets protesting constantly. That I believe her country is illegitimate does not make me any less worried about her and her family once Israel finds themselves alone with nothing but enemies and its horrors are turned back at itself. The fascist regime in Israel is a disaster for everyone.

Also for Jews outside of Israel. They all had an open invitation to move there for decades, they have refused to do so, many in spite of antisemitism in the societies where they live. That's anti-zionism in practice, yet now antisemitism is again on the rise thanks to Israel and Europe's bullshit tradition of antisemitism continues. Protect them and support them whenever you see a chance to, even if it can be a mental challenge to keep Jews and Israel as separate concepts in your mind. They really are separate.

The only ones benefiting from all of this are American evangelical Christians cheering for the rapture. They are trustworthy political allies of Netanyahu because they literally want the world to end. I guess western weapons exporters are also having a blast.

Well, sorry for rambling on. It has been going on for a long time, and once one starts to realize the extent of the problem it is easy to start hating. If you do, make sure to hate the right thing: Netanyahu, his political allies, the IDF, and Zionism are all very fair targets of hatred. May they rot.

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 1 points 3 days ago

Agreed. I certainly try to hate the right things.

The genocide started in 1948

What the fuck are you talking about

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 7 points 4 days ago

The initiative emerged in July 2025, organised by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, Global Movement to Gaza, Maghreb Sumud Flotilla and Sumud Nusantara, during the Gaza war. The flotilla comprises over 40 vessels with 500 participants from more than 44 countries, making it the largest civilian-led convoy of its kind in history. Some attempts to break the Israeli blockade were successful before 2010, but since then ships have been intercepted or attacked by Israeli forces, including an attack by drones in May 2025 and interceptions in international waters
