A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:
- Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
- When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
- More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else
Rules
- All posts must be showerthoughts
- The entire showerthought must be in the title
- No politics
- If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
- A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
- Posts must be original/unique
- Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS
If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Not really.
The people who have an issue with that, don't have an issue with Rafael Cruz making up a white name.
They just don't like people transitioning.
You're implying transphobia is a common view.
Nobody is mad at Ted for changing his name. Folks are mad at him for pulling the rope up now that his family is here "legally", then trying to white wash his identity so you don't question him on it.
It absolutely is. And it used to be a lot worse. Took a lot of people coming out at risk of their lives and livelihoods before we reached even this level of support for transgender civil rights.
It's not?
Of course not...

I think you might be confusing our political system for a democratic one...
A minority of the populace voted for what's happening these days. The majority of people just don't give a shit, they're fine with people living how they want.
It's an important distinction, because the bigots always want the targeted minority to view all of the majority as an enemy.
If battle lines are just "bigots" vs "non bigots" then the bigots lose every fucking time. That's why they always try to make it "majority" vs "minority", dont let them do that. And definitely don't help them do that with posts like OPs and comments like yours
Don't get outsmarted by stupid fucking bigots. A lot depends on it now.
You seem to be mistaking “majority” and “common”.
OP literally said "everyone"...
They said "everyone" accepts actors making a fake name, not specifically that everyone is transphobic.
Also, your study there ain't doing that much to show its not common, as self-report/Social Desirability bias will skew that data but also saying they can live their life how they want doesn't mean you're not also transphobic... even ignoring that, at minimum 31% are? To say that isn't common means you have to interact with fewer than 3 people daily, and that neither of those 2 happen to be transphobic. Sure if you stay at home and the only two people you see every day are the same two who have accepted you, congrats! Transphobia is cured! Otherwise... Yeah 1/3 people means it is EXTREMELY common. Like, to put it in perspective, Asians are like 6% of the population. Yet I wouldn't exactly call seeing an Asian person "rare".
You didn't need to tell me that you also didn't know the definition of the word "minority"...
But you did
I… what? Fine since you can’t read anything with numbers less than 50% let me put it to you this way so MAYBE you understand.
Let’s assume you interact with 50 people a day(pretty low I interact with about 200 daily but I’m not gonna assume that’s normal), and let’s say 10 of those are probably friends family so we’ll ignore them. The probability of none of the other 40 being transphobic using your 31% would be (1-.31)^40=0.999999641 which is literally close enough to 100% to be considered a rounding error. Is that common enough for you?
I used Asian people as an example because it was a simple way to construe how low percents still are not rare because how many people we see daily. Using the same calculation there’d be a 91.5838% chance at least one person you see is Asian.
You guys ever get the impression nearly everyone on internet message boards is autistic?
And I don't mean that in a mean way, I mean that literally.
I've worked with very low functioning populations before and this shit really tries my patience more than my clients did back in the day...
But yeah man, it's a spectrum. And when you strip out all the facial/tonal cues and general body language...
Yeah, everyone is going to act like the people who can't pick up on that stuff. Because none of us can pick up on it on message boards.
Hell, think about the "/s" and how people would react if the majority insisted everyone literally say "I'm done being sarcastic now".
Obviously you're going to see parallels in communication issues.
You don't need everybody to be transphobic for transphobia to be a big problem, and OP certainly didn't explicitly say that "everybody" is transphobic.
That sure doesn’t sound like a niche thing
So...
You think 31% is "everyone" like OP said?
Because if you disagree with both of us, it makes no fucking sense to criticize me and not the person who was off by 59%...
“Everyone” had nothing to do with my reply. You were saying that transphobia was not common. I quoted the relevant statistic from the survey you linked that implied otherwise.
I didn't say everyone had a problem with transgender people, I said everyone was fine with celebrities making up fake names
Often they have to due to SAG rules. Only one person can have a name while being part of the union.
Like Emma Stone. Her real name is Emily Stone, but there was already one working with SAG, so she had to change it. She even prefers Emily.

Accepting that people can live as they wish is not the same thing as transphobia not being a common view.
I have an issue with Raphael Cruz making up a white name.
