Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

My Venezuelan cousins are happy. My Mexican girlfriend thinks it's great. I feel like Iam taking crazy pills. My Cuban family are celebrating.

It's like nobody can see the diplomatic or international implications. They don't seem to understand that every LatAm country should be concerned and afraid.

Your Venezuelan cousins must be happy to see their country get sold out to a hostile foreign power. That is true ignorance. I'm sorry.

A lot of people also celebrated Trump's 2nd term. Same thing really. You will find those same fools anywhere on earth. Most people on this planet are just really fucking dumb.

I said something similar to my girlfriend and she said "you just don't understand." Maybe. But I don't think she nor my cousins understand either.

This is imperialism at it's most brazen. Trump is now emboldened and thinks, "I did what Putin could not. And I did it faster. Some say it's the fastest. I don't know if it's the fastest, but maybe it is..."

Mark my words, he'll do it again. And I think it will be to invade Mexico to "fight narco-terrorists." He wouldn't depose Sheinbaum, nor do I think he could easily *, but he'll definitely make incursions over the border.

* - I asterisked because I know the "Akshuallies" are going to come. Yes, I didn't go down every single possible road in this scenario.

EDIT: Since I posted that I saw this: https://www.mediaite.com/media/tv/somethings-gonna-have-to-be-done-with-mexico-trump-floats-further-intervention-to-fox-friends/

Mexico is next.

Greenland, then Canada. It’s about oil and minerals

Imperialist Bingo - the Fox & Friends name for World War III.

Every country everywhere just saw a unilateral "police action with military support". We in the USA should think about what that means too

The thing is, I get that Maduro is trash. But this is not the way.

Right now it's "hurting the people he should be hurting". That's all most people can think.

Are your cousins in Venezuelan or Florida?

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Both. When my family left Cuba for the United States in 1961, they had to stay in Venezuela for six months while they waited to come here. A number of them stayed in Venezuela. The rest went to Florida. My mom and uncle arrived here with my grandparents and great grandparents when my mom was 7 years old.

My Cuban family are embarrassing. Thankfully my mom has some sense and doesn't vote GOP. The rest... they are lost.
