edit: wait, doesn't this mean that the new guy has to resign from the senate? Am I remembering this correctly?

Yeah, but it won't make a difference. The Governor gets to appoint a replacement to finish his term, and that runs through 2030. They aren't going to appoint a Democrat. Most likely it will be a failed Republican candidate from a recent election.
