She's not really fired.

Most other governments would call this a cabinet shuffle. She's not out of a job, she's going to be given a new one.

No she's been given a made-up job. One of those where you collect a big, fat government paycheck and only have to come in to an empty desk for a few hours every month. They're great if you can get one. Unless you're a showboating narcissist who murders puppies.

You dont get to keep that job long term.

Ive seen it happen to a few C Suite execs in my time, they get moved to a new department to spearhead a new initiative that everyone knows is doomed and in 6 months they quietly disolve that initiative and pay them a redundancy because THAT project didnt work out and please dont look into the job they were doing 6 months ago because thats not why they were made redundant.

Out of a cannon, right?
...
Right?

edit: wait, doesn't this mean that the new guy has to resign from the senate? Am I remembering this correctly?

Yeah, but it won't make a difference. The Governor gets to appoint a replacement to finish his term, and that runs through 2030. They aren't going to appoint a Democrat. Most likely it will be a failed Republican candidate from a recent election.
